What should you do if you don't have to watch video, but only listen to the audio? In these cases, you want the portability and storage offered in an MP3. However, you don't need to have both. We will show you how to easily convert MP4 video file to MP3.
There are several free file converters that you can use directly in your browser or download to your desktop. Read on to learn more about our favorites and our simple instructions on how to convert your MP4 using these free tools.
Step 1: Navigate to CloudConvert
The CloudConvert homepage is the best place to start. CloudConvert is an intuitive, cloud-based service that offers a standalone option that requires little more than an internet connection and your file. It is completely free, does not require any additional software and supports fast conversion between over 1
While the resulting audio quality is great, as is the conversion speed, there is a free account that can only process files smaller than 1 GB. Other limits for the free version are up to 25 conversion minutes per day, five simultaneous conversions, and free accounts have a low priority compared to paid accounts. However, CloudConvert should meet your needs if you only need to convert a few smaller files per day.
Step 2: Select the files you want to convert
Click the Select the File button in the middle of the page and select the video files you want to convert to MP3. A pop-up window will appear where you can find or search the desired files on your computer. You can also choose a file from a URL or from your Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive. Note that you will need to log in to your cloud storage account through the Cloud Convert site to access your cloud storage files. Doing so may automatically create a free Cloud Convert account.
Once your files are selected, click the Open button in the bottom right corner to add the file to the conversion queue.
Step 3: Choose your output format
Click the dropdown arrow button that appears after uploading your MP4 file and select then audio followed by MP3 in the drop-down list. Click the wrench icon right next to the file if you want to refine the audio bit rate (up to 320 kbps), channels, frequency, normalization or trim the new file to a certain length. The latter is an incredibly useful tool if your video has an introduction or ends with unwanted audio. When you're done, click the red button okay .
Step 5: Start the conversion
Click the red Convert button on the right side of the page when done setting your desired output preferences. A gray-yellow bar will appear at the top, indicating the current status of the conversion, along with a cancel button should you change your mind for any reason. Then wait for the conversion to complete.
Step 6: Download your new MP3
It may take a while, but Cloud Convert will let you know when your conversion is complete. Then click the green button Download and select a save destination for the file. Now that you've ripped your audio, you need a decent MP3 player to play on. These are our favorites.
