How to convert M4A files to MP3

The M4A file format is not really a household name and is far behind the much more popular MP3. However, that does not mean that it is not relevant. Apple's iTunes Store – a dominant factor in digital music distribution – offers DRM-free music as M4A files alongside AAC, so it's not impossible that one day you'll find an M4A song that you want to play somewhere other than iTunes.

Step 1: Select your M4A file

There are a number of cloud conversion sites, but our favorite for this specific task is Cloud Convert. Go to the home page and click on the gray button Select files and then select the desired M4A file that you want to convert. If you click directly on the button Select files a file explorer view of your system will open, from which you can select your file. If you click on the Down button, you can choose from a number of other sources, such as DropBox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box or a URL.

A possible alternative online converter is Online Audio Converter. You can find more information about this method in our manual for converting FLAC to MP3.

Step 2: Adjust your output settings

After you have selected your file, you will see the Conversion Options screen. Click on the file format arrow and select the MP3 option in the audio format list. Unless otherwise stated, Cloud Convert automatically converts your file to an MP3 with a variable bit rate between 220 kbps and 250 kbps.

You can click on the wrench icon next to the drop-down menu to adjust the file's output settings. From there you can change the number of audio channels, the sampling frequency and more. If you are satisfied with your settings, click on the blue button OK in the lower right corner.

Step 3: convert the file

Click on the red Start conversion button on the right. When the conversion process is complete – it takes about 10 seconds with most files – your file will be available for download.

Step 4: Download your new MP3

The green Download button indicates that your MP3 file is available. You can click directly on the button and your file will be saved in your default download folder. Options available via the drop-down arrow include creating a QR code for download to a mobile device. If you click on the Create Archive drop-down list, you can include your files in a compressed file of various types.
