How to delete Android apps from your smartphone or tablet

google play delete button

With so many interesting (and free) apps in the Google Play Store, you’re sure to download some that you don’t end up using. Leaving unused apps on your Android device can affect performance and take up storage space. Here’s how to delete Android apps.

In general, any app or game you install from the Play Store can be removed. Exceptions to this are some apps that come pre-loaded on your phone or tablet. You can sometimes “turn off”

; these apps, but not always.

Delete Android apps

There are two ways to delete an Android app or game: from the Play Store or the home screen / app drawer. We’ll first cover the Play Store method, which works the same way for everyone.

Open the Play Store on your Android smartphone or tablet and tap the hamburger menu icon in the top left corner.

Select “My apps and games” from the menu.

Switch to the “Installed” tab and find the app you want to remove.

go to the Installed tab and select an app

From the app information page, tap the “Delete” button.

tap Delete

Confirm that you want to remove the app from the popup.

That is it! The app will be removed.

The second method depends on the home screen you are using and the skin of your device. In most cases, you can tap and hold an app icon to open a context menu.

In that menu, tap ‘Delete’.

select delete

A confirmation popup asks if you are sure. Select “OK” to remove the app.

Some launchers require you to drag the app icon to a “Delete” button. Others have an “App Info” option in the context menu, which takes you to a page in the Settings menu where you can remove the app. If you are not sure how it works with your launcher, just use the Play Store method.

Disable Android apps

Some Android apps cannot be removed, but they can be disabled. A disabled app will not be removed from your device, but it should not run in the background or appear in your app drawer.

Disable is usually available for pre-loaded apps that are not essential to the operation of the device. For example, if the Facebook app is pre-loaded, you probably won’t be able to delete it, but it can be disabled.

To do this, we’ll first swipe down from the top of the screen (once or twice, depending on your phone or tablet manufacturer) and tap the gear icon to open the Settings menu.

swipe down and tap the gear icon

Then select ‘Apps & Notifications’.

select apps and notifications

Tap ‘View all [Number] Apps ”for the complete list of installed apps.

Select the app you want to remove / disable.

On the app info page, you will see the option ‘Delete’ or ‘Disable’. Tap it.

tap turn off

A popup will ask you to confirm that you want to disable the app. Tap “Disable App” to continue.

If the app cannot be disabled, the option will be grayed out.

That’s all there is to it. A disabled app will remain on your device and can be re-enabled at any time.
