How to delete profile pictures from your Slack DMs

In 2020 Slack added profile pictures to the list of users in your private messages. If you are not a fan, there is a toggle that allows you to enable or disable DM profile pictures. Here’s how to remove people’s avatars from your direct messages list.

Before Slack added profile pictures to the list of users in your DMs, the list only showed names and a circle indicating whether the user was online. (If the circle is empty, the user is offline, if the circle is full, they are online, and if there is a ̵

6;z’ in the circle, notifications are disabled.)

After Slack added profile pictures, the list became more colorful, but it was a lot harder to see at a glance the status of those you interacted with.

Fortunately, Slack has hidden a switch in the communication service’s settings that allows you to enable or disable the avatars.

Start by opening the Slack client on your Windows 10 PC or Mac. (The setting is not available on the cell phone for Android, iPhone or iPad.) Open the client, click on your profile picture in the top right corner of Slack and select “Preferences”.

That’s all there is to it. Close the preference pane and your DMs will be refreshingly photo-free again. If you ever want to re-enable profile pictures in your Slack DMs, repeat these steps.
