First launched as a prototype satellite in 1974, the global positioning system (GPS) provides geolocation and time information to a GPS receiver anywhere on or in near the earth. The technology only found its way to telephones in 1999, but GPS continues to offer crucial positioning options and information to both civilians and soldiers.

Thanks to GPS, apps such as Google Maps, Waze and more can guide you to your destination. It is also thanks to GPS that the battery runs out because certain apps constantly determine your position.

Fortunately, it is extremely easy to disable GPS if you do not want to use it for any reason. Here is our step-by-step guide for turning off GPS.
