How to download the WatchOS 8 beta now

Here’s how Apple Watch updates generally go: A new operating system upgrade — in this case, WatchOS 8 — will be unveiled at WWDC, which takes place from June 7-11 this year. Apple will immediately roll out a series of beta releases to developers and then to members of a public beta program. Then, around the end of September, the new WatchOS – hopefully perfected and without problems – will be released to all Apple Watch owners.

We’re at the beginning of that process right now, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get excited right away, with some massive new health features on the way to your wrist. Here̵

7;s how to try the WatchOS 8 beta right now.

Wait for the final release of WatchOS 8

Take this as a fair warning to be careful. For years, Apple has made pre-release updates of its various operating systems available to developers and select members of the public as beta testing platforms. These pre-release versions are usually full of bugs and not ready for general use except for the most adventurous and those with an extra device on hand that they don’t depend on. For all general users, we strongly recommend waiting for the final version of WatchOS 8. Once you have installed the upgrade, you cannot go back to the latest version of WatchOS. If you’re still a champion, here are some general instructions for installing the beta.

If you can’t wait…

Apple developers can find and install pre-released updates to WatchOS through the Apple Developer Center, but citizens must enroll in the developer program to download interim builds — which costs $99 a year. To access it, you need to install the WatchOS 8 beta certificate from the developer website. Also, make sure to use the iOS 15 developer beta on your iPhone before attempting to install WatchOS 8.

Compatible devices

The following Apple Watch models can install the new WatchOS 8:

How to install the WatchOS 8 beta certificate

The certificate tells the Watch app on your iPhone that WatchOS 8 is available. Once the Watch app detects the update, the installation process is the same as any other WatchOS update. If the beta doesn’t show up, reboot and do the following.

  • Sign in to developer.apple.com on the iPhone paired with your Apple Watch.
  • Crane Discover > WatchOS > To download.
  • Sign in with your Apple ID if prompted.
  • Crane Install profile next to WatchOS 8 Beta.
  • Crane To allow on the prompt asking permission to install a profile.
  • Crane to install.
  • Enter your password if prompted.
  • Crane Install > Restarting to restart your watch.

Once your Apple Watch has rebooted, the setup process should look familiar.

How to install WatchOS 8 from your iPhone

Make sure your Apple Watch is charged at least 50% and connect it to the charger.

  • Connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi and launch the Apple Watch app.
  • Press My watch tab.
  • Crane General > Software update > Download and install.
  • Type your iPhone password.
  • Crane Agree to the conditions.
  • Crane to install on your iPhone and/or your Apple Watch.

The WatchOS update will be downloaded and transferred to your Apple Watch, which will then reboot to apply the update. If the update fails on authentication, try again. If it continues to fail, unpair and re-pair your Apple Watch and try again.

How to install WatchOS 8 via your Apple Watch

With Apple, you can update your Apple Watch from the Settings app directly on the Apple Watch. The Apple Watch must be connected to a charger before the update can be installed, and this will not happen until your watch’s battery is at least 50%.

  • Open Settings on your Apple Watch, using Siri or your app list.
  • Crane General > Software update > To install.
  • Crane OK.
  • Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
  • Agree to the terms and conditions while still on your iPhone.
  • On your Apple Watch, tap Download and install.
