The dark mode is a function in many apps and operating systems such as MacOS and Android or iOS. It makes your windows black, changes the text and icons to lighter colors and makes everything appear more shady. It is a nice look if you prefer to work with darker tones, or prefer to work in dark environments, where a clear screen can be hard on the eyes.
The feature also offers some savings on the battery life, if you have a device with OLED display. In this guide we show you how to activate dark mode in Windows 10 in a few simple steps.
Enabling the Windows 10 dark mode
In the update of Windows 10 October 2018, Microsoft extended the dark theme to all parts from File Explorer. This means that you will become even darker for your money when you switch on the dark mode below. For example, you can enable it in the most recent version of Windows 10.
Step 1 : Go to Windows 10 settings. You can type it in the Windows search bar or click on the gear icon in the Start menu.
Step 2 : Go to Personalization with an icon of a brush on a computer screen.
Step 3 : When the window is opened, click on Colors in the left sidebar.
Step 4 : Scroll to the center of the page and look for the part with the text Select your standard Windows mode . Then click on the option with the text Choose your color . Click on the box and choose the option with the text Donker .
Step 5 : This step is optional, but you can also choose an accent color. Scroll up to the color palette at the top of the "Colors" window. With dark mode activated, the accent color is even more important to help you find the boundaries of Windows and find where everything is at a glance.
We advise you to stay away from the very dark colors, such as the dark green and gray tones, because they are more difficult to recognize. The lighter, more eye-catching colors are generally a better bet. The reds are mainly edgy, while the blues add the most visibility. That said, it's really your decision. The changes are immediate, so feel free to click around until you find a color that works.
Please note that with many apps you can also change the color settings for that individual app. So if you find the perfect accent combination, but find it doesn't work with your apps, there is a way to fix it. Go to the app's original settings and look for options to change the theme or color mode.
