Whatever we do to protect our sensitive devices, accidents are still happening. Of those accidents, a cracked screen is one of the most common. But what can you do to fix your iPad if this happens to you?
Whether you choose the manufacturer, a third-party repair center or carry out the repairs yourself, we guide you through options if you break the screen of your iPad.
Finding out which components of the iPad are broken
The iPad has different levels of components, some of which can be damaged in whole or in part by a drop: a glass panel, digitizer (or touchscreen) and an LCD. The glass panel is the top layer, the touchscreen of the digitizer is below, while the LCD screen is under the digitizer. When you drop your iPad, the top glass can crack, creating a spider web pattern of sharp small fragments that cover the front of your device. Under the glass, the digitizer or touchscreen, which is fused with the upper glass layer, retains an electrical force that responds to the tap and swipe movements that you use to operate the screen. The underlying LCD screen displays the images and content on the screen. If you drop your iPad but still operate it, view content, and use the touchscreen, chances are that only the top glass is damaged. If you cannot use gestures or see content, the touch screen and LCD screen are also damaged.
Here are some options for repairing damage to your iPad screen.
The first thing to do if you are confronted with a cracked or broken iPad screen is to find out what Apple can do and how much it can do for the iPad maker costs to repair his product. Even if your iPad is still covered by the original one-year limited warranty, accidental damage will not be covered by your cat pushing from the kitchen table to your stone floor at exactly the wrong angle. Apple ̵
How expensive it depends on the model – unless you were conscientious enough to purchase an extended AppleCare Plus warranty for $ 99, which covers unintended damage to the iPad screen for two years, among other things.
This is Apple & # 39; s cost overview for repairing a broken iPad screen without the extended warranty:
- iPad mini, iPad mini 2: $ 199
- iPad, iPad 2, iPad Air, iPad 5th generation: $ 249
- iPad 3rd generation, iPad 4th generation, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 4, iPad mini (5th generation), iPad Air 2: $ 299
- iPad Pro 9.7-inch, iPad Air (3rd generation): $ 379
- iPad Pro 10.5-inch: $ 449
- iPad Pro 11-inch: $ 499
- iPad Pro 12.9-inch, iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd generation): $ 599 iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation): $ 649
The cost of such an accident under an AppleCare + policy, on the other hand, is $ 49 per incident, with a limit of two incidents. That extra $ 99 doesn't seem so bad now. You can order a temporary replacement iPad with the Apple Express Replacement Service, even before you hand over your cracked device to Apple.
When you send your damaged tablet to Apple for repair, the company may take three to five business days to send you a temporary replacement. If you need to email it to Apple, add $ 6.95 shipping – or you can take it to the nearest Apple Store and deliver it for free. You are also responsible for any applicable taxes.
If you want Apple to repair your broken tablet, you can submit a repair request directly from the Apple website. Apple notes that "if the problem with your iPad was caused by serious damage from an accident or misuse, you may have to pay the full replacement value." Nevertheless, if Apple repairs or replaces your broken iPad screen, it's probably the best option if you can afford it because your fixed iPad is guaranteed new or equal to new.
Although the one-year automatic limited warranty does not accidentally cover damage, some small cracks on the screen may in some cases be considered errors or defects. It doesn't hurt to go to a local Apple store to see if it's covered. Although, ideally, your iPad should be in perfect condition, if the cracks are small enough, you may not need to do anything about it. If Apple does not cover them under warranty, you can continue to use your device instead of shell-out for an expensive screen repair. In the meantime, you can invest in a protective cover or screen protector to prevent further damage.
Repairs by third parties
If a non-Apple employee places a leg on your cracked screen, your warranty automatically expires. However, if your iPad is already out of warranty, there are other, possibly less expensive options that you can consider from external suppliers, many of which are fairly well known. Also consider the nationwide network of Apple Authorized Service Providers, who may be able to offer you a price for an iPad screen solution. But they are often not cheap either.
When searching for an external repair company – Apple authorized or independent – make sure you have all the information you need before turning over your device, such as costs, schedule, warranty, and the source of replacement parts. Always check local reviews to make sure you are dealing with a reputable outfit.
Do It Yourself
This option is not for the faint hearted, but if you are of the adventurous type, mechanically inclined, or just short on cash, some DIY repair kits are available from iFixIt or on Amazon and have received good reviews from users. Make sure you are up to the challenge before you take your tablet apart. Here are a few tips:
- If you purchase a ready-made screen repair kit, make sure it is designed for the device that you are repairing. One size does not fit on all devices and repair kits are not available on all devices.
- Determine whether you have cracked the top glass layer or whether you have damaged the touch mechanism or the LCD. These are separate categories of damage.
- Protect your eyes by wearing safety glasses while you work.
Let's look at a few sample DIY kits.

Every replacement device you get from Apple is clean, so you can easily restore your backup data to use the replacement device while you wait for your repair.
