Trials are meant to get you hooked, but if you want to binge-watch a show or access a few movies, you may only need the 30-day trial to satisfy your craving. You can find trial versions for HBO at the source, HBO.com, or through other streaming services. Trial availability changes over time, but we found that both Hulu and Amazon Prime seemed to offer ongoing trials for the content of the service. Keep in mind that many trials will bill your credit card as soon as they finish, so put a reminder on your calendar to cancel before that date if you don’t want to continue your subscription.

Call your cable provider

Your cable provider may be able to offer you a free trial of HBO or HBO Max, and you don’t have to play any tricks. Many cable and satellite TV providers have HBO tests on hand because the service is so popular that customers check it out regularly. The key to calling your cable provider is to be honest and ask if there are any HBO trials available because you want to try the service; Now is a good time to remember that old saying your mom told you: You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

Another tactic with cable providers is to say that another competing service is offering HBO with their package at a lower price; your provider may decide to adapt the competition. If they can’t offer you a trial period of HBO, don’t worry because we still have other methods to try and get your favorite shows and movies for free.

Visit the HBO website for free shows

This may come as a surprise, but the HBO website offers select episodes of shows to watch for free. Most of the first few episodes will be available. While the HBO website probably won’t walk you through an entire show, it’s a great way to see if it’s worth signing up for a full HBO subscription. Test those shows your friends keep telling you to see if HBO is right for you.

Free entry with AT&T and DirecTV

AT&T Store

Warner Media, the company that owns HBO, is in turn owned by AT&T. Due to the close ownership of these three companies, AT&T typically offers HBO for free or at a discount to its customers. If you are an AT&T Unlimited Elite customer, HBO Max is included with your subscription. Plus, DirecTV is owned by AT&T, so users who sign up for their Choice or Ultimate packages will receive a year of HBO Max for free. If you’re already a member of any of these services, you may be able to access HBO without knowing it.

Convince friends to share that password

Sharing passwords for streaming services isn’t exactly a secret, and it could be your ticket to access HBO for free. Contact friends and family who run streaming services to see if someone might be willing to give you their login information. In fact, you might be able to trade services like giving a friend or family member access to Netflix (although the streamer is reportedly cracking down on password sharing) in exchange for HBO. Sometimes it’s about who you know.
