How to hear estimated travel time with one tap on iPhone

Apple Maps iPhone iPad iOS Icon Hero

If you drive to the same place every day (to or from work, for example), you probably want to know how long it takes to leave. Thanks to the shortcuts on the iPhone, it is easy to create a special shortcut that indicates the current travel time to your home, office or another destination. Here’s how.

Your iPhone gets this estimate from Apple Maps and predicts the current time it takes you to travel to the destination based on live traffic and other factors.

First, open the Shortcuts app. If you can̵

7;t find it, swipe down on your home screen with one finger and type “Shortcuts” in the search box. Tap the “Shortcuts” icon when you see it in the results.

Type

With the shortcuts open, tap “My Shortcuts” at the bottom of the screen and add a new shortcut using the Plus (“+”) button.

Tap the Plus (+) button.

On the “New Shortcut” page, tap the ellipses button (three dots in a circle), then tap the “Shortcut Name” field and enter any new name you want. We chose “Speak Travel Time”, but you can call it anything you want. Then tap ‘Done’.

Enter a shortcut name to use.

Back on the main editing shortcut screen, tap the “Add Action” button. In the window that appears, find ‘Travel’, then tap ‘Get Travel Time’.

In the action pane, search for

You will then see an action with the text ‘Get driving time from current location to end location’. Here you can tap ‘Drive’ to change the type of commute from car to walking, public transport or cycling. You must also set the starting point (default “Current location”) and ending location.

Obviously, your end location will vary depending on whether you’re calculating the travel time from home to work or from work to home. In this case, we’ll assume you’re starting from home (so we’ll leave ‘Current Location’) and set a custom destination by tapping ‘End Location’.

In the screen that appears, enter a destination address and tap Done.

Find a destination address and tap it in the results list.

Back on the shortcut editing screen, tap the round plus (“+”) button to add another action. In the panel that appears, search for “speak” and then select “Speak Text” from the results.

In the action pane, search for

Now you have finished defining the shortcut. It’s quite simple! You can test it by pressing the triangular “play” button in the lower right corner of the screen.

Press

When you hit that play button, the shortcut will run and you should hear Siri speaking out loud for a while, such as ’10 minutes’ or ‘2 hours’. Time will vary based on live traffic conditions calculated with Apple Maps app.

Then let’s add this shortcut to the home screen to make it even more convenient. On the main shortcut editing screen, tap the ellipses button (three dots in a circle) next to the shortcut name.

Tap the ellipses button next to the shortcut name.

In the “Details” view that appears, tap “Add to Home Screen”.

Choose an icon you want to use and tap ‘Add’. Then return to your home screen and find the “Speak Travel Time” icon you just created. Tap it and Siri will speak the current travel time to your custom destination aloud. (If you don’t hear it, make sure your volume is turned up and silent mode is off.)

Tap the shortcut icon on your home screen to run it.

Alternatively, you can also activate this new shortcut by voice using Siri. Start Siri and say the name of the shortcut. In this case, say ‘speak travel time’. Siri will run the shortcut and report the results to you. Pretty handy. A safe trip!
