Use third-party apps

As mentioned before, using the Photos app is not the safest way to hide photos. As much as we would like to believe the device in our pockets is safe, the truth is, it isn’t. Fortunately, there are a number of apps that can better hide your photos and videos, making them inaccessible to prying eyes or otherwise.

Many third-party apps allow you to set passcodes or other security measures that make your photos more difficult to access. Below are two of our favorites, both of which are free to download, but To do offer optional paid premium services.

Private photo vault

Private Photo Vault lives up to its name. The app lets you lock your photos behind a PIN, Touch ID or Face ID so that only you or someone you trust can view them.

When you first use the app, you will be prompted to import photos from the Photos app or use your camera to take snapshots. After that, the app will ask you to delete the now hidden photos from Photos app. You can add photos from the native app or camera at any time by tapping the big blue Plus icon in the lower right corner of an album.

What’s interesting about this app is that it includes a built-in web browser. Press Web tab at the bottom and enter a URL in the address bar on the next screen. The idea here is to download images privately from the internet and store them securely in one of the app’s galleries.

While the app offers basic features for free, you’ll need the premium version to access everything it has to offer, such as unlimited photo albums, wireless photo transfers, a break-in report for when others try to access your hidden photos, and the possibility to create a bait password. Unlike the next app on our list, premium features are a one-time purchase of $ 5.

Save Safe Photo Vault

Keep Safe helps millions of people store their photos easily and securely by locking them behind a PIN, Touch ID or Face ID. In general, it offers three ways to hide your photos: get them from the photo library, take a snapshot by opening the camera, or take a video with the camera.

At first glance, it looks like any other third-party photo app. You can select a photo and share it with others, move it to a specific album, post to Facebook, and so on.

Unlike Apple’s native Photos app, you can lock all albums with an additional alphanumeric password in case prying eyes can get past your original PIN. These albums also have a blurry cover image. In fact, you can turn on a bait safe and create your own PIN or pattern.

The basic features are free, but you have to pay for a subscription to access everything this app has to offer. Premium features include securing up to 10,000 items, freeing up space on your iPhone, recovering deleted items, and removing ads. Prices are $ 10 per month, $ 24 per year, or $ 150 for a lifetime. Yikes.
