If you have a Windows 10 license, Microsoft allows you to install the latest operating system ISO files for free. With a Windows 10 ISO, you can install a fresh copy of the latest Microsoft operating system on all your Windows PCs, that is, you have an active Windows 10 license. Whether you want to boot Windows from a USB drive or optical disk, we have you covered. In this guide, we'll walk you through downloading a Windows 10 ISO and installing it on your PC.
Step 1: Download the Windows 10 ISO legally from Microsoft on Windows
To get started, go to the Windows 10 download page and click the blue button Download now . If you use a computer with Windows 7, 8 or 10, you will be offered the Windows 10 Download Tool. If not, skip to step 2.
This tool makes it easy to turn any USB key into a Windows 10 bootable installer, and you can also download the Windows 10 ISO file for future reference use. Run the tool when it is downloaded. You will be asked if you want to upgrade your current PC or create installation media for another PC.
Select Create installation media for another PC, as shown above, then click Next . You will be asked to select the desired language, architecture and edition of Windows. It is usually best to check the box for Use this recommended option for this PC but you can also customize another language of the Windows edition such as Windows 10 Pro or Home.
Then if you want to install Windows on your PC, select the option ISO file . Doing so will save a file that you can click later (as in step 3) to upgrade your PC to Windows 10. If desired, you can also use the ISO to burn Windows 10 to a DVD, in which case you can proceed to step 4.
If you want to create a USB flash drive otherwise, choose the option USB Flash Drive . If you do this, you can create a bootable USB drive that you can use to erase everything from your computer and opt for a so-called & # 39; Clean Install & # 39 ;. You can also use this USB drive on other computers to install Windows as well. With this option, all you have to do is choose your USB drive and download Windows 10 on it, but be warned, everything on the drive will be erased.
But for most people, the ISO file is the safest method. When selecting ISO file click Next . You will be asked where you want to save the ISO file. Once the download is complete, the ISO file will be on your computer's hard drive. You can proceed to step 3.
Step 2: (optional) Download Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft on Mac, Linux and Windows Vista / XP computers
Windows 10 Download Tool only works on computers with Windows 7, 8 or 10. If you are not using any of those operating systems, you can still download the Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft. Just go to the Windows 10 download page and it will see that you are not using a compatible operating system.
From this page you can choose which version of Windows 10 you want to download, and you will get both 32-bit and 64-bit ISO in the language of your choice. You can then copy the ISO file to a USB stick and transfer it to a Windows laptop or computer to proceed with the installation.
Step 3: Install Windows 10 directly from the ISO from Windows 7 or 8 / 8.1 windows-10-mounted-iso “/>
If you are using Windows 8 or newer, you can upgrade your PC or laptop to Windows 10 by mounting the ISO file you just downloaded. Just double click on it. Windows displays the ISO as if it were a DVD drive.
From here you can install Windows 10. Open setup.exe and the installer will open. From here, you can choose to install Windows 10 in place, leaving your files and programs. All necessary data is copied from the ISO to your computer, which eventually reboots your PC to complete the installation process.
If you are using Windows 7 or earlier, the ability to mount ISOs is not built into Windows, but you can download Virtual Clone Drive and use that to mount ISO files. Once you have mounted the drive, the installation works the same as described above. You can also try the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant, if you want to upgrade from Windows 10. We have a manual for this.
Step 4: burn the Windows 10 ISO to a DVD
If your computer has a DVD burner and you have a writable DVD at hand, you can download the Windows 10 ISO to a DVD and install Windows 10 by booting from it. Right-click the ISO file and then click Burn disc image. The Windows Disc Image Burner opens and asks you which drive you want to use.
When you are done, click Burn to start the process. When it's done, you have a bootable DVD that you can use to install Windows. You can use other software to burn your ISO, but the built-in software is easy enough to use.
Most computers should boot from DVD by default, but in some cases you may need to open your computer's boot menu to install Windows 10 from DVD. Annoyingly, this requires a different keyboard shortcut on different devices, but if you're paying attention when your computer boots up, you should see instructions for accessing the boot menu.
Other Uses for the Windows 10 ISO File
There are many other uses for a Windows 10 ISO file. For example, you want to install Windows 10 on your Mac or set up Windows 10 in a virtual machine application. In either case, the ISO file is the preferred tool for installing Windows 10.
At least you need a valid Windows 10 product key to install Windows 10. This is not a problem on computers with Windows 7 or Windows 8 / 8.1. You can upgrade on the spot and Windows 10 will detect your previous license. If that doesn't work, you can use the product key on your device: just look for a sticker.
But the free ISO file is not a free Windows license. It's just an easier way to install Windows 10. Mac users, custom PC builders, and anyone installing on a virtual machine will need a product key to legally install Windows 10. They can buy Windows 10 Home for $ 120.
