Google Forms is a great way to collect responses from others online, be it for a job or a research project. Manually limiting the responses is possible, but you must install add-ons to limit them automatically. Here’s how.
Limit Google Forms responses by Google Account
If you want to limit the responses you receive on Google Forms, you can start by limiting responses by Google account. Users who respond to your form must sign in with a Google account to respond, with each account limited to a single response.

This will help improve the quality of the answers and avoid duplicate answers. To get started, open the Google Forms form in your desktop web browser and click the settings gear icon in the top right corner.
In the “General” tab of the “Settings” pop-up menu, click the “Limit to 1 response” check box to enable it.
Once it is enabled, click “Save” to confirm the change.
At this time, only Google account holders can respond to your form, with answers limited to one per account.
Manually restrict all responses in Google Forms
Unless you want to leave a Google Forms form indefinitely for replies, you may want to disable replies at a later point. While Google Forms won’t let you schedule this without installing an add-on, you can manually turn off responses to your form.
To do this at any time, open your Google Forms form in your desktop web browser. Click on the “Comments” tab to view your comments.
In the “Responses” tab, select the “Accept Responses” slider to disable further responses.
Once it’s turned off, the slider will turn gray with a red border. To add a custom message to notify potential respondents that the form is closed for submissions, enter a message in the appropriate “Message to Respondents” text box.
The message you insert is automatically saved. When new respondents try to load your form, they are greeted with this message and will not be able to complete or submit the form.
Automatically restrict responses to Google Forms
Unfortunately, Google Forms doesn’t have the ability to automatically limit responses based on a preset send number or closing date. If you need this functionality, you must first install a Google Forms add-on called formLimiter, although alternatives are available.
To add a new Google Forms add-on to your account, open your Google Forms form in your desktop browser and click the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner.
In the drop-down menu, click on the “Add-ons” option.
In the ‘Google Workspace Marketplace’ menu you will see a list of available apps that you can install. Use the search bar at the top to search for “formLimiter” to install, or scroll the list to find it manually.
Once you find formLimiter, click on the name, map icon, or information icon to view more information.
In the “formLimiter” information menu, click the install button to install the add-on.
Google Forms needs permission to install the add-on. Click on the “Continue” option to accept the terms and conditions and proceed with the installation.
In another window, a list of rights that formLimiter has access to will be visible. Confirm you’re happy with this, then click “Allow” to give him access to your Google account.
Once the permissions have been granted, formLimiter can be accessed by clicking the add-ons icon on your Google Forms page. Click the “formLimiter” option from the drop-down menu.
A pop-up menu will appear in the lower right corner. In the ‘Limit type’ drop-down menu, you can set response restrictions based on the number of responses or based on the date and time.
Limitation of Responses to Submission Number
To limit responses to submission number, select “Number of form responses” from the drop-down menu. Enter a maximum number of submissions in the box below the drop-down menu (for example, “10” to limit responses to ten submissions).
To change the message that potential respondents see when the form is closed, make your changes in the box provided. To receive an email when submissions are closed, click the “Email form owner when submissions are closed” checkbox.
Click on “Save and Enable” to save your settings.
After responses to your form have exceeded the target number, the form will close and no further submissions will be possible.
Limit responses by date and time
To stop replies after a closing date and time, select “Date and Time” from the “Limit Type” drop-down menu.
Use the appropriate boxes to set a closing date and time that is appropriate for your form. If you click on the boxes, you can use the built-in calendar popups to select it.
Once a time and date are selected, make changes to the closed submission message using the box provided (or leave it if you are happy with the preset message). If you would like to receive an email when the closing date and time expires, click the “Owner email form when submissions are closed” check box.
Click “Save and Enable” to add the closing date to your form.
Once saved, submissions will no longer be possible after the closing time and date you selected.
Disable response limits with formLimiter
If you want to disable these limits before the target submission number or closing date is reached, click Add-ons> formLimiter and then click “Disable” from the pop-up menu.
