Although the debate about how to further pronounce GIF is raging, we generally all agree that this animated image format makes the internet a little more fun. But have you ever thought of making a few GIFs yourself? With your Android phone you can easily create fun GIFs using various apps from the Google Play Store. In this comprehensive guide we view our favorite GIF app to get you started.

What is a GIF?
From a geekier point of view, a GIF is a bitmap image format created by computer scientist Steve Wilhite in the late 1980s. GIF is an acronym that stands for "Graphics Interchange Format." It was initially designed as an image format that could be easily downloaded from the now-extinct CompuServe ISP. However, the GIF did not acquire its distinctive ability to present until a few years and a few revisions after its first release.
Nowadays, GIF & # 39; s are a general image format used on the internet to easily present short animations. Community & # 39; s, such as r / GIF & # 39; s, on Reddit, are committed to sharing some of the best GIF & # 39; s available on the internet and show the format capabilities. Due to the relatively small file size of the format compared to full-resolution video, GIF & # 39; s have become an easy way to share moments on the web. It is important to note that GIFs are indeed an image format and therefore cannot reproduce audio – they are silent.
Creating a GIF on Android with GIPHY
To start creating your own GIF, you need to download an app from the Google Play Store. After testing, we found our favorite option to be the GIPHY app. GIPHY was launched in 2013 and is one of the most popular GIF databases on the web, but the Android app also offers the option to create one yourself. Start by downloading the app using the link above and then follow our steps below to get started.
After you have downloaded the GIPHY app to your device, open it. You will immediately see the GIPHY gallery, from which you can browse and search for different GIFs – if you are not familiar with the format, this is a great place to explore and get started. Otherwise, tap the Create button in the upper right corner of the screen to create your own GIF. When using the app for the first time, you must approve two permission requests for the application to work properly.
You will now see the GIPHY camera; from here you start making your GIF. Basic controls are the X button in the upper left corner to exit the creation process, and two icons in the upper right corner -; a lightning bolt to activate the flash of your camera and a circular arrow to rotate your camera forwards and backwards and vice versa.
To film a GIF, hold the large round button at the bottom of the center of the screen. While holding down the button, the app starts filming and a colorful border starts to encapsulate the screen – once the border has gone around, you no longer have recording time. Release the button when you are done and a preview of your GIF will be displayed. Tap the purple arrow button to save the GIF; you can then share it or upload it to GIPHY for storage.
Tip: Do you want to work with a video clip that you have already recorded? On the camera screen, select the & # 39; stack photo & # 39; s & # 39; in the lower left corner, you can then choose existing video & # 39; s on your device to convert to GIF & # 39; s.
Fun with GIF & # 39; s on Android
The GIPHY app also offers various customization options to enhance your GIF & # 39; s to give some of that special spunk. Before you start recording, tap the smiley face in the bottom left corner on the camera screen to enable some filters. Alternatively, once your GIF has been captured, and before you press the purple arrow button to continue, you can adjust GIF & # 39; s by adding text, special effects and stickers. You can even crop your GIF if you want to remove parts of it.
Motion Stills: an alternative to GIPHY
If you are not a fan of the GIPHY app , you might want to view the Motion Stills app from Google. Motion Stills is second to our favorite GIF app for Android and also allows you to create GIFs with your camera. We love some of the more unique features that Motion Stills makes possible, such as the ability to speed up a 60-second video to a shorter GIF, and some of the app's augmented reality features. However, we are not fans of the GIF time limit of 3 seconds and the inability to import existing videos from your photo gallery.
