If you are a YouTube Music fan, you know it can be frustrating to use it on an iPhone as it is not as integrated with Siri as Apple Music. Anytime you want to listen to something new, you have to ask Siri to play songs specifically on YouTube Music. Well, it used to be as Apple now lets you set YouTube Music as the default music app for Siri.
It’s part of Apple’s iOS 14.5 update, which promises to be the most substantial iOS upgrade since last fall’s big 14.0 update. The new change for Siri in iOS 14.5 doesn’t only apply to YouTube Music – you can also set other audio apps as your default player, such as Spotify, Deezer and Pandora. You can even choose podcast and audiobook apps as your default, showing just how versatile this new feature can be.
Apple is currently testing iOS 1
Option 1: Ask Siri without giving up a music app
One option to choose YouTube Music as the default player is to simply ask Siri to play a song, artist, or album without giving up the app. Your iPhone will then show you a list of all available audio apps to play that song. Just tap on ‘YouTube Music’ to continue.
If you haven’t already turned on the Use with Siri Ask switch in YouTube Music’s Siri & Search settings, you’ll see a prompt that says, “ I need access to your Spotify data to do this. Is that OK? ”Tap“ Yes ”to continue.
This list appears when you tell Siri to play something for the first time after updating to iOS 14.5, but it might show up differently from time to time.
Option 2: Ask Siri to play a song from YouTube Music
If you don’t want to tap your selection, you can just say it. Just ask Siri to play a song, artist or album from YouTube Music. If this is your first time asking Siri to play from YouTube Music, iOS will choose this as your default music app with no confirmation that it has happened. Your confirmation play music from the app with Siri without giving up the app.
Again, if you haven’t turned on the ‘Use with Siri Ask’ setting in ‘Siri & Search’, you will need to tap ‘Yes’ at the prompt that says’ I need access to your YouTube Music data to do this. Is that okay? “
Remember: this feature is in beta testing
Just as a reminder, if you’re looking at this feature, it’s definitely not stable at the moment. You may notice that the audio player list is not displayed for you or iOS reverts to Apple Music even after setting YouTube Music as the default. There is also no option in the Settings app under Music, Siri & Search or YouTube Music like when you change your default email client or web browser. Future updates to iOS 14.5 should resolve these issues.
