At the top corner of your keyboard is an often neglected key with a long history: Scroll Lock. Fortunately, you can easily reassign Scroll Lock to serve a more useful purpose, or configure it as a shortcut to launch a program on Windows 1
But It's Already Useful
The Scroll Lock key was on the very first IBM Pc released in 1981. It was meant to switch between a function for which you can use the arrow keys to move text within a window instead of the cursor. Today, the arrow keys in most programs operate automatically based on context. As a result, the Scroll Lock feature is rarely used as originally intended.
However, a prominent program still uses Scroll Lock for its original purpose: Microsoft Excel. When Scroll Lock is turned off, use the arrow keys to move the cursor between cells. However, if Scroll Lock is enabled, you can use the arrow keys to scroll through the entire workbook page within the window.
Many KVM switches switch inputs if you double tap Scroll Lock. Some older programs also use Scroll Lock, but these are relatively rare scenarios for most people.
Scroll Lock is so rarely used that it may not be on your keyboard at all, especially if it is a compact or laptop keyboard.
If you have the Scroll Lock key and never touch it, you can put it to work by doing something useful.
Reassign the Scroll Lock key
With Microsoft's free PowerToys utility for Windows 10, you can easily reassign the Scroll Lock key to another key or some system functions. Remapping means that when you press Scroll Lock, instead of activating Scroll Lock, the key does something else. This way you may be able to use the Scroll Lock key for many different tasks.
Here are some suggested functions you can assign to the Scroll Lock key:
- Mute / Unmute Volume: Quickly control the audio volume from any source. This is especially useful if you want to mute your computer to answer a call.
- Play / Pause Media: This is useful if you regularly listen to music on your computer. You can just tap Scroll Lock to pause a song and then tap it again to play.
- Sleep: With one tap you put your device in sleep mode.
- Caps Lock: If you always accidentally hit Caps Lock, you can assign it to the Scroll Lock key instead. You should also disable the Caps Lock key by assigning another function to it.
- Browser Renewal: With one push of a button, the current web page is quickly reloaded.
If any of these sound good to you, you can select the desired function on the Scroll Lock key. First download Microsoft PowerToys if you have not already done so. Launch it and then "Keyboard Manager" in the sidebar. Then click "Reassign a key".
[Window9] that appears, click the plus sign (+) to add a shortcut.

Click the "Assigned to" section on the right side of the drop-down menu, and then select the function or key you want to assign to Scroll Lock. For example, in our list above, select "Mute Volume."

You can experiment with different assignments to see which will be most useful. If at any time you don't like the assignment, just go back to the "Remap Keyboard" window in PowerToys. Click the trash can icon next to the assignment to delete it.
If you don't like PowerKoys, you can also use SharpKeys keys, although the interface isn't that easy to use.
Starting a Program with the Scroll Lock Key
You can also use Scroll Lock as part of a keyboard shortcut to launch any program you want, and you don't need to use a special utility.
First create a shortcut to the program you want to run and place it on your desktop. Then right click on the shortcut and select "Properties".
On the Shortcut tab, click the "Shortcut" box, and then press Scroll Lock. Windows automatically inserts "Ctrl + Alt + Scroll Lock" into the box.

From now on, when you press Ctrl + Alt + Scroll Lock, the program displayed by that shortcut will be Started Make sure you don't delete the shortcut Some people keep keyboard shortcuts for apps in a special folder for this reason
