T-Mobile will start sharing your web browser and mobile app data with advertisers starting April 26, 2021

. T-Mobile will automatically enable this for almost everyone, but you can opt out to prevent T-Mobile from selling this data to marketers.

This also applies to other providers owned by T-Mobile, including Sprint and Metro from T-Mobile.

What data does T-Mobile sell to advertisers?

As The Wall Street Journal reports, an update to T-Mobile’s privacy policy says the company will share data about web browsing and mobile app usage with advertisers. By tracking your mobile app usage and web browsing, T-Mobile can place you in a group known as a ‘target audience segment’. Here’s how T-Mobile explains it:

“When we sell target segments, we Do not sell information that directly identifies customers, such as name, address, or email address. Audience segments are more likely to be associated with mobile advertising IDs, which are a long string of numbers and letters. For example, this could say something like “2drdn43np2cMapen084 ″ is a sports fan.”

For example, if you visit a lot of cooking websites on your T-Mobile mobile connection, T-Mobile can put you in a target audience segment interested in cooking. These “may be used by T-Mobile or sold to third parties to make ads more relevant to you.” In other words, you may see a lot of cooking-related ads in this scenario.

In return, you will get more highly targeted ads. A T-Mobile spokesperson told The Washington Post that many subscribers say they prefer more relevant ads, so that’s why T-Mobile enables this feature by default for almost everyone. T-Mobile does not enable it for kids or business accounts, but it is enabled by default for any other account.

If you do not want T-Mobile to share your information to provide you with targeted advertising, you can prevent T-Mobile from doing so.

As Ars Technica points out, The Wall Street Journal states that T-Mobile is more aggressive than AT&T and Verizon in selling this data, but AT&T and Verizon still have ad programs that also use your data.

For Sprint, log in to the Sprint account website. Go to My Account> Preferences> Manage Advertising & Analytics Preferences. Click on the rule for which you want to change the setting and uncheck Use my data to make ads more relevant to me.

For Metro by T-Mobile, use the MyMetro app or go to the Advertising & Analytics Data Choices page. You must open this page on your Metro device. If you’re using the app, go to Account> Network & Location Settings and uncheck ‘Use my data to make ads more relevant to me’.
