How to Run iPhone and iPad Apps on Mac

If you have a Mac powered by Apple Silicon (like the M1

processor), you no longer need to remove your iPhone or iPad to use some of your favorite mobile apps. As long as you are using macOS 11Big Sur or later, you can download and install iPhone and iPad apps on your Mac.

Before you can run an iPhone or iPad app on your Mac or MacBook, you must first download it from Apple’s App Store.

Start by clicking the Launchpad icon in your computer’s dock.

Then click on the “App Store” button. If you can’t find it, use the search bar at the top of the bat to find the app.

You can also use Apple’s built-in Spotlight search to open the app. The easiest way to do this is to press Cmd + Spacebar on your keyboard. The search box will appear in the center of your screen. Type “App Store” and select the first item.

You can now enter the name of the iPhone or iPad app in the search bar at the top left corner of the window.

You will not immediately see the app you are looking for. This is because the App Store only shows Mac apps by default. Click on the “iPhone and iPad apps” list to switch views.

If the developer of the iPhone or iPad app has chosen to make their mobile app available on Mac, you will now see it on the results page.

Info: If this is your first time downloading the app, you will need to authenticate (using your MacBook’s TouchID fingerprint sensor or your Apple ID password) and see the “Get” button. The cloud icon indicates that you have previously downloaded the app on one of your devices and that verification is not required.

Click the “Get” or Download button (which looks like a cloud icon) to start the download process.

Once the iPhone or iPad app is installed on your Mac, select the “Open” button. The app opens in its own window and works like any other application developed for your Mac.

Later, after closing the App Store, you can open and run the iPhone or iPad app on your Mac by searching for it in Launchpad or by using Spotlight search as above.

Unfortunately, at the time of writing, there are no Macs with touchscreens. You will need to interact with any apps or games you download with your trackpad, mouse, or keyboard.
