Before creating or editing a spreadsheet in Google Sheets, make sure the default currency for the document matches your expectations. Here’s how to change the default currency and check it in existing spreadsheets.

Set the default currency for all sheets

To set the default currency for all new Google Sheets, go to your profile language settings at https://myaccount.google.com/language. After you select your language in the ̵

6;Preferred language’ section, Sheets assumes that you want to use your language area currency as the default in all new Sheets you create in the future.

For existing sheets, you must manually change the currency for each sheet using the method described below.

Set the default currency for the current sheet

Google Sheets remembers the currency setting for each sheet individually. You can change this by setting your current locale. To do this, open your favorite web browser and go to Google Sheets. Then load the spreadsheet for which you want to change the currency.

Once it loads, click File > Spreadsheet Settings from the menu at the top of the page.

Click Spreadsheet Settings under File menu in Google Sheets

In the “Settings for this spreadsheet” window that appears, click the “General” tab.

Click the General tab under Settings for this spreadsheet

Under ‘Local’ you will see a drop-down menu with the names of different countries. Choose the country whose currency you want to use. For example, if you want to set US dollars as the default currency, select “United States.”
