Are you watching a video on YouTube that moves too slowly or too fast? It’s easy to speed up (or slow down) the playback of a video on the YouTube website or YouTube mobile app. Here’s how.
7;s playback speed controls work
YouTube includes a feature called “Playback Speed” that allows you to choose a speed between 0.25 times and 2 times the normal speed. Since “1” is the normal speed, “0.25” is equal to a quarter of the original speed (slow-motion playback) and “2” is twice the normal speed.
If something seems like an eternity – maybe a long presentation, interview, or podcast where everyone speaks slowly – you can even speed it up. Likewise, if you’re watching a tutorial and things are going too fast, you can slow down the video so you can keep up with the pace.
YouTube playback speed does not change the pitch of the video when you speed it up or slow it down. If so, a person’s voice might sound like a squeaky mouse when it is fast or like an unwieldy giant when it is slow. Instead, it compresses or expands the audio and video clips to keep the same pitch during playback, so it sounds like the same person is talking faster or slower. Music will also play faster or slower without changing the musical key.
How to change YouTube playback speed on the web
You can change the playback speed in both a web browser and the YouTube mobile app for iPhone, Android and iPad. First, we’ll show you how it works on the Internet.
To slow down or speed up a YouTube video in a browser, go to YouTube.com and navigate to a YouTube video. Open the playback toolbar and click the gear icon in the lower right corner of the video area.
In the menu that appears, click on ‘Playback Speed’.
In the “Playback Speed” menu, you can select a speed between 0.25 times and 2 times the speed, including an adjusted value within that range. Since “1” is the normal speed, any value less than 1 will slow down the video, while any value greater than 1 will speed up the video.
After that, click outside the menu to close it, and the next time you hit the play button, the video will play at the speed you selected. To return it to normal, click the gear icon again, select “Playback Speed” and choose “1” from the list.
Change the YouTube playback speed in the YouTube mobile app
To slow down or speed up a YouTube video on your iPhone, iPad or Android device, open the YouTube app first. While playing a video, tap the screen once to open the toolbar, then tap the vertical ellipses button (three dots vertically aligned) in the top right corner of the video frame.
Select ‘Playback Speed’ from the menu that appears.
Select the desired speed from the “Playback Speed” list. Remember that any value less than 1 will slow down the video, while any number greater than 1 will speed up the video.
Then close the menu and the video will resume at the selected speed. To return the speed to normal, tap the ellipses button again and change the speed to “1”.
