If you’re browsing the web on your iPhone, you’re bound to run into this problem all the time – a website wants your location. It can happen when performing a location-based task, such as using a store locator, or when a web app just wants to deliver better ads or local recommendations. If you are tired of allowing or denying permission every time, there is an easy way to stop the annoying security popups.
Why you see these clues
Since iOS 13, Apple has given us custom permissions to use camera, microphone and location in Safari. When prompted, you can block or allow a site to access any of these items on the device. But you can also choose default permissions for each in Safari. Otherwise, you will be prompted every time a web app wants to use your camera, microphone or location.
When it comes to location permissions in Safari, the default setting asks you for access every time. So even if you “don̵
Stop all location notifications in Safari
To delete all location request prompts for websites, go to “Safari” in the Settings app. Scroll to it Settings for websites section, then tap Locations.
If you’ve manually denied or allowed location access to websites through “Website Settings” (in the “AA” menu) in the Safari browser, you’ll see those sites listed here, which you can change individually. But that’s not what we’re here for – we want to prevent all location popups from showing for websites in Safari.
below Location access on all websites – or Other websites If you have custom settings for individual sites listed above, tap “Allow” or “Deny”. Allowing all sites gives any web app unfettered access to your location without asking, and denying location permissions will stop all location tools from working on web apps. Either way, you will no longer see any prompts.
Regardless of which one you choose, you can still deny or grant access to a specific website location through the “Website Settings” menu. Each of these manually modified sites will appear in the list on this page.
Block location access to Safari altogether
When it comes to blocking websites from viewing your iPhone’s location data, there is another route you can take – and it surpasses the one above.
Go to Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> Safari Websites. Here you can choose “Never” which will prevent Safari from accessing your location. That means all websites in Safari will also be denied location data, even the ones for which you set individual permissions.
If you choose Ask Next Time, Safari will ask for permission to use your location itself, but only for every session – not every time a web app requests a location draw. If you choose “When Using the App”, Safari will never ask for location access itself, as it already has that privilege. However, individual websites may request this depending on your settings in the section above.
Add more privacy to your browser (iOS 14 only)
If you don’t deny Safari itself a location permission and choose to allow all or some web apps to access your geolocation, you may not want those allowed websites to find out your exact device coordinates.
In iOS 14 and above, there is a “Precise Location” option that appears in every consent request you receive, and it’s easy to miss. Accurate location data is useful for navigation web apps that need to track you, but you probably already have solo apps for those apps, such as Apple Maps, Google Maps, and Waze. Most other sites can do without knowing your true location. But there is a Safari-wide control to allow or deny sites access to your exact position, giving them only a general location.
To turn off Precise Location, you must have iOS 14 or later. Then go to Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> Safari Websites. Once there, turn off the “Precise Location” switch. When the setting is off, sites are approximated to your location – not to determine accurate coordinates.
