How to Stream Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max in December

Patty Jenkins, the director of Wonder Woman 1984, really wanted to bring the superhero blockbuster to theaters. “It’s so great on the big screen,” Jenkins said at the summer DC FanDome event. “We all worked so hard to bring something that was going to be a great visual spectacular great time. So we’re going to hold out. We believe in bringing it to theaters.”

But even superheroes can use the coronavirus pandemic. In mid-November, the filmmakers announced a Christmas surprise: Wonder Woman 1984, starring Gal Gadot and Chris Pine, will be available on HBO Max. ($ 15 at HBO Max) subscribers to watch at no extra cost on December 25, the same day it opens in theaters.

How to watch Wonder Woman 1984 from home

If you subscribe to HBO Max

Wonder Woman 1984 is an enjoyable holiday gift for HBO Max subscribers, mainly because it doesn’t cost them extra on top of their monthly or annual subscription fees. Currently, HBO Max costs $ 14.99 per month. Then Disney’s live action Mulan came to Disney Plus in September, even subscribers had to pay an extra $ 30 for Mulan (through December 4 becomes free for all subscribers). Wonder Woman will not have that extra cost. Just tune in to HBO Max as you normally would on December 25th and the action will unfold.

Theaters will also show it

Many moviegoers have not returned to their favorite cinema since the pandemic lockdowns started in March. Some theaters remain closed. And even the theaters that are open have special precautions and less seating. But certain theaters will be showing Wonder Woman 1984, WarnerMedia’s statement said.

“If you are lucky enough to live in a place where theaters are open, we think we offer a great option given the Cinema Safe protocols our partners have put in place,” Jason Kilar, WarnerMedia CEO said in a statement. “This provides exhibitors with a film experience with social distance, masks, cleaning and ventilation protocols.”

Last resort: wait

If you’re not comfortable with theaters or HBO Max, Wonder Woman 1984 will eventually come out on DVD and Blu-ray. No date has been given for when that will happen, but probably sometime in late 2021.

How long will it be available on HBO Max?

It’s a bit unclear. WarnerMedia has announced that Wonder Woman 1984 will be available on HBO Max for “the first month of the movie’s release”. After that, the film will remain in theaters, but WarnerMedia has not promised to leave it online. So if you want to watch the HBO Max version, do it before January 25th.

What is it about?

Warning: minor spoilers for the first movie ahead.

Wonder Woman was the third highest-grossing film of 2017, behind only Star Wars: The Last Jedi and the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast. A sequel was inevitable, and as the title promises, the action moves to the gung-ho eighties. The movie is set in 1984, the year of the Los Angeles Olympics, and there’s some oh-so ’80s big hair and shopping mall action.

Gal Gadot plays Wonder Woman, the Amazon daughter of Zeus and Hippolyta. Her strength and powers surpass anything people can throw at her, but their world also confuses and bewildered her. Her love interest is American GI Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine. He appeared to die in the first movie, but come on, Hollywood can’t let such an integral Wonder Woman companion stay dead.

Robin Wright will again play General Antiope, Wonder Woman’s aunt, in the sequel, despite sacrificing herself for Wonder Woman in the first movie. (Maybe she’ll end up in flashbacks? Or does the plot of this movie just stand alone?) Connie Nielsen is also back as Wonder Woman’s mother, Hippolyta, the queen of Themyscira, the island home of the Amazons.

New characters include Kristen Wiig as supervillain Cheetah and Pedro Pascal (yes, The Mandalorian himself, the father figure of Baby Yoda) as villain Maxwell Lord.
