When it comes time to shut down your iPad completely – which can help with troubleshooting or save battery power – the process isn’t immediately obvious. Fortunately, there are two easy ways to do this, and we’ll show you how.
Switching off versus sleeping
It is important to understand the difference between locking your iPad and turning off your iPad completely. When you press the side or top button on your iPad once, you just turn off the screen and put your device in a “lock”
When you turn off your iPad, the device shuts down completely, turns off and uses no battery power at all.
Turning off an iPad with hardware buttons
To quickly turn off your iPad using the buttons on the device, you will need to perform a slightly different push maneuver depending on the type of iPad you have.
- On iPads without a Home button: Simultaneously press the top button and the volume up or down button until the power off slider appears on the screen.
- On iPads with a Home button: Press and hold the top button until the disable slider appears.
When you see the ‘Slide to turn off’ slider on the screen, place your finger on the white circle and slide your finger to the right.
Your iPad will begin a quick shutdown process and then shut down completely.
Turn off an iPad with the Settings app
It’s also possible to access the power off slider from the Settings app – no buttons needed. This can be useful if your iPad’s top button or volume buttons are broken.
To get started, launch Settings on your iPad by tapping the gray gear icon.
In Settings, tap General.
In General, scroll down to the bottom of the right column and tap Shut Down.
When “Slide to Power Off” appears on the screen, swipe the white circle to the right and your iPad will shut down completely.
That is it. Now you can finally relax or turn the iPad back on immediately.
How to turn your iPad back on
After shutting down your iPad, you may want to restart it right away when you restart it to fix a problem. Fortunately, that is easy to do. Press and hold the top button of your iPad for a few moments until you see the Apple logo in the center of your screen. After that, you are ready to go. Lots of fun!
