The key here is to remember to use a combination of buttons to turn your phone off now. If you can’t remember the order of buttons to press and when, there’s a software button in the settings app that turns your phone off.
Below, I’ll walk you through the mysterious button combination to turn off your iPhone, another button combination that will reboot a problematic iPhone and, finally, where to find the software button to turn it off.
Turn off your iPhone 11 or iPhone 12
Okay, so here’s what you need to do to bring up the power menu. On your iPhone 11 or iPhone 12, you need to use the reduce volume button and the side button at the same time. It doesn’t take long – just a few seconds. You will feel a haptic vibration and then see the on / off slider at the top of your screen, as well as a medical ID and an emergency SOS slider at the bottom.
Slide the power switch from left to right and your phone will turn off. To turn it back on, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo on your iPhone screen.
Reboot a struggling iPhone 11 or iPhone 12
If your phone is running slow or freezes and you can’t get the power menu to appear, you can initiate a hard restart using a series of buttons that Apple introduced with the iPhone X.
Start by pressing the volume up buttonthen press the volume downFinally, keep the side buttonA new energy menu will appear, disregarding all medical and emergency information. But instead of sliding the switch, press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo appear on your phone.
Don’t worry, a hard restart of your phone won’t erase any data or information. But it more often than not solves every problem you are having.

If you just can’t memorize the button combination, this might be easier. Open the Settings app and go to General and scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen. There you will find a button with the label Shut downTap it and slide the switch to turn off your phone.
That wasn’t so bad, was it? To be fair, I usually use a hard restart to turn my phone off and on. Since it’s my number one troubleshooting method and no data is lost, it can’t hurt.
