If you’ve never heard of it Valheimyou should probably check the strength of your Wi-Fi connection. This Minecraft-like hybrid of open-world survival meets Viking RPG has taken Steam by storm. The kicker? Valheim is only in beta and plans to release the full game in the next year.
Like it Minecraftplayers must collect resources to build tools. They will then use those tools to build stable structures and weapons. The only tool that will cause problems for players in the early stages of Valheim is the pickaxe. Everything else is easy to do with the resources at your disposal in the Meadows Biome. However, you need the pickaxe to progress in your Viking adventure. Here̵
Valheim: Pickax materials
The pickaxe is the only tool that you cannot easily make when you start your journey ValheimThe first version you can make is the Antler Pickaxe, which requires you to collect Hard Antlers. But where the hell are you going to find it?
You will have to find and defeat Eikthyr, the first boss in it Valheim, to obtain Hard Antlers. To find Eikthyr, go back to where you first started the game and summon him from the altar after presenting two deer trophies. However, don’t take on this boss fight without the right equipment.
Challenging and defeating Eikthyr
You can only craft wooden gear and leather armor in the early stages of the game. Hence, the pickaxe should be your main goal. It will enable the extraction of copper and tin. For best results, engage the Eikthyr boss fight with:
- Full leather harness and the Deer Hide Cape.
- Reach weapons, either a bow and arrow or a spear.
- A wooden shield for extra protection.
ValheimThe company’s survival mechanics are profound. You will have to find food and prepare meals to give yourself the boost you need to survive in the Viking wilderness. Before you think about challenging Eikthyr, eat three good meals to maximize your health and stamina.
You should be able to fend off Eikthyr’s AoE and ranged lighting attacks with decent dodge and your shield. The deer god will occasionally attack with a melee attack, so dodge out of the way and resist with a melee attack. This melee attack is the most powerful on Eikthyr, so avoid it at all costs. This first boss fight isn’t painful. It just takes patience, the right equipment and stamina.
Making your pickaxe
Now that you’ve defeated Eikthyr, you can collect Hard Antlers and craft the Antler Pickaxe. Go to your workbench and put everything together. With the Antler Pickaxe you can now mine tin and copper, further improving your weapons, tools and armor. Of course, the Antler Pickaxe isn’t the end of your pickax quest.
Making a bronze pickaxe
Now that you have progressed in the next part of the game, collect the materials needed to make bronze and bronze items. For the Bronze Pickaxe you need:
- 3x Core Wood
- 5x Surtling colors
- 6x copper to make a blacksmith shop
- 10x bronze
To make bronze you need to combine 20 copper and 10 tin in the forge. This will give you 10 bronze. Finally, combine bronze and heartwood on a workbench to create a bronze pickaxe and other bronze weapons, tools, and armor.
Making an iron pickaxe
First you need to craft a Bronze Ax to get 25 Fine Wood and make a Forge Cooler. Then upgrade your Forge to level 2. From here, use your Bronze Pickaxe to grind Scrap Iron from Muddy Scrap Piles. Use the scrap metal to forge iron. Combine the iron with 3x Core Wood to make an iron pickaxe.
