Google Maps offers great turn-by-turn navigation, but it̵
Driving mode is a feature that uses both Google Maps and Google Assistant. It is only available for devices with Android 9+ and requires the device to be in portrait orientation. You will of course need both the Google Maps and the Assistant apps installed on your Android phone or tablet.
The first thing you need to do is sign up for Driving Mode. To do this, say “Hey Google” or swipe from the bottom corner to launch Google Assistant.
Then tap on your profile icon in the top right corner to open Assistant settings.
Scroll through the list of settings and tap Move.
Here you can tell the Google Assistant what your preferred mode of transport is. Select “Driving Mode” at the bottom.
Now make sure that “Drive mode” is turned on. You can also allow or reject incoming calls and messages while driving.
In the same menu, tap on ‘Hey Google’ detection ‘.
This will take you to the ‘Ok Google’ detection settings of the Assistant. To use Assistant while driving without touching your phone, enable the ‘While driving’ option.
That’s all you need to do in the Assistant settings. To use driving mode, open Google Maps, find where you want to go and tap “Start” to start navigation.
If you’re using Driving Mode for the first time and a message appears asking if you want to try it, tap it.
You are now in driving mode. There is also a toolbar at the bottom with quick access to Google Assistant and Apps. Tap the grid icon to open the App Launcher.
The launcher provides quick access to any apps or actions you need while driving. It automatically lists your media and messaging apps.
At the top there are shortcuts to simplified “Calls” and “Messages” interfaces. The “Media” button suggests things you can immediately listen to without opening any apps.
Using voice commands is much safer while driving. Just say “Hey Google” or tap the Assistant icon and say one of the following helpful commands:
- Dial: “Call” or “Call [contact]. “
- Answer a call: The assistant says’ Call from [contact]. Do you want to pick it up? “
- Send a message: Send a message to [contact]Or “Send a message.”
- Receive your messages: “Read my messages.”
- Listen to music: “Play [artist], ‘Or’ Play [genre]. “
Driving Mode is essentially a larger, simplified launcher that you can use while driving. The idea is to keep your eyes on the road as much as possible. Hopefully the driving mode will make you a safer driver.
