How to Use Google Meet: Free Video Conferencing If You Don't Like Zoom

Google

Google takes more steps in the video chat room during the pandemic coronavirus and now offers its premium video conferencing service Google Meet for free to consumers. Previously available only to organizations using G Suite, Meet is now open to everyone, in a move that puts Google in competition with the rival video chat service Zoom.

Although Google Hangouts and Duo were previously available for casual video chatting, Meet allows up to 1

00 participants to call simultaneously and includes features such as scheduling, screen sharing and real-time subtitling.

For the free version of Google Meet you need to create a free Google account. Video calls have a 60-minute limit, but Google said it won't enforce that limit until September 30.

Google has also introduced a number of standard privacy protections with Meet, including host controls (such as the ability to allow or deny access to a meeting, and mute or remove participants), complex meeting codes, and encryption during transmission. This seems to be targeting Zoom, which saw a huge wave of users after the coronavirus locks and quarantines started – but was recently confronted with a number of security vulnerabilities, including uninvited guests at "Zoombombing" meetings.

Google is far from the only technology company looking to share some of Zoom's business – Facebook, Skype and Microsoft have all recently released new free video chat features and services for groups.

Meet began rolling out its free version earlier this month. You can use the video chat service on the web at meet.google.com and in mobile apps for iOS or Android.

Free use of Google Meet

To sign up for the free version of Google Meet, go to the Google Meet page. Enter your name, email address, country, and primary usage for Google Meet (personal, business, education, or government). Agree to Google's terms of service and click Send .
