How to use the built-in stock function in Microsoft Excel

If you need stock market data for your spreadsheet, you can save time and get up-to-date information with the built-in Stocks data type in Microsoft Excel. Here’s how to fill your sheet with details such as ticker symbols, market caps, previous close and more.

Add inventory data to your excel sheet

To use the Stocks data type in Microsoft Excel, you just need an internet connection and a bit of your own data to get started.

Open your spreadsheet and type in a piece of information such as a company name or stock symbol. With the cell still selected, open the “Data”

; tab and then click “Stocks” in the “Data Types” section of the ribbon.

After a few seconds (depending on your internet connection), you may see the “Data Chooser” sidebar open on the right. This occurs when your item cannot be found or when more than one inventory with that name is available.

Click “Select” under one of the options available in the sidebar.

If you click out of the cell that contains your original data, just select it again and then click the little Insert Data icon that appears next to it. A long list will appear that you can scroll through with all the stock market data you need.

Choose the information you want to include and it will appear in the cell on the right. You can continue to add details for the inventory in the same way. Any additional details you choose will be filled in the following cells on the right.

You can also add column headings to identify the data you include. However, you can click the cell with an item at any time to see what it is in the formula bar.

View the data type map

The scrollable list of details for a stock is useful, but you can also view the same data in chart format. Right-click the cell containing the company or stocks you typed first, then select “Show Data Type Card” from the menu that appears.

You can then see those same details in an easy-to-read snapshot. You can also drag the bottom right corner to enlarge the map if necessary. To add displacement information from the map to your sheet, hover your cursor over that piece of data and then click the Extract to Grid icon.

Refresh the stock data

Like the Geography data type in Microsoft Excel, the Stocks data type retrieves information from an online source. This means you can update it without opening a web browser.

To do this, right-click the cell with the company name or stock symbol and select Data Type> Refresh from the menu that appears.

Don’t see the stock feature?

If you don’t see the Stocks data type in Microsoft Excel, make sure your system meets the following requirements:

  • You use Excel for Microsoft 365: Microsoft may add this feature to additional versions in the future, but you should use it for now.
  • You have been updated to the latest version of Office: Microsoft is rolling out this feature gradually, so you may have to wait. Just keep checking for new versions of Office.
  • English is set as the editing language in Office: Excel data types are available only if you have done this. You can learn how to change it in Microsoft Word here, and this will change it in Excel too.
