Do you need a webcam, but don’t feel like drilling all over the dough for a complicated setup? Fortunately, there is a much cheaper alternative, thanks to the folks at Wyze. The acclaimed brand of high quality budget cameras, theand models can be converted into fully functioning webcams if you need live video in no time. Wyze has been determined with this firmware patch, mainly to warn users that nothing can beat the performance of a real webcam and that the company will not be offering additional tweaks for this update.
Webcam and security camera on the cheap side
The Wyze Cam V2 isn’t very new, but if you need a webcam or home security camera that won’t cost you too much money then it’s a winner. If you happen to own the Wyze Cam Pan too, this one will work too.
Before you start, you need to get some mandatory accessories to complete the task. You need to get a microSD card and a specific type of USB cable, aTo be precise. And finally, this has been confirmed to work with computers running Mac OS 10.13, Windows 7 and Windows 10.
1. Download the new firmware
Before zooming with the Wyze Cam, you must first install the new firmware. Download the zip file through here and, after extracting it, copy the file “demo.bin” to the root directory of your microSD card. It is recommended to use a 32 GB microSD card.
2. Install the new firmware
Once the file has been copied to a microSD card, disconnect the camera before inserting the card into the slot on the bottom of the card.Keep the Setup button while reconnecting the power source to the camera. You need to hold down the Setup button for another three to six seconds until the LED light turns solid blue, then you can release it.
3. Connect it to your computer
The firmware will take approximately three to four minutes to complete the installation. You know it’s done when the status light blinks yellow and blue at the same time. Once you see this, you can unplug the camera from the power source, plug one end of the USB-A cable into the back of the Wyze Cam V2 and the other end into the available USB port on your computer.
Wyze mentions that it is also possible to use a USB-C to USB-A cable, but this did not work in our testing. Your computer recognizes the Wyze Cam V2 as an “HD USB Camera”, so you can select it as an option in your conference apps.
Going back to a security camera is tricky
Yes, it is convenient that the Wyze Cam V2 can be converted into a webcam, but if your goal is to use it as a security camera again, you will need to go through the process of reverting it back to its original firmware. It’s quite frustrating because the method is essentially identical.
Nonetheless, it remains a more affordable option than some of the controversial webcams currently available online – even if you add the microSD card and USB-A to USB-A cable. Nonetheless, you’re still paying under $ 50, which is a fraction of the $ 100 price most independent retailers charge on Amazon.
Recognizing that this is best suited for desktop structures as most people take advantage of the handy integrated webcams on laptops, making it a persistent user of your work-from-home office is a sensible plan. The video quality isn’t that bad either, as long as there’s enough lighting around you. However, the audio quality is not the best. That’s probably why even Wyze suggests using an alternative audio source for the microphone.
