You want to track your sleep with the Apple Watch? You are out of luck because this is not an Apple feature, not even on the latest Apple Watch Series 5 or the latest version of WatchOS.
What do you do then? There are a few solutions for apps and the use of your iPhone; but none is ideal, and we begin with a reminder of that one major drawback that you might be able to change your mind about using the Apple Watch to track sleep.
Remember the battery
Here's a solid reason not to consider the Apple Watch as a portable sleep tracker ̵
If you decide to try to track sleep with your watch, it is advisable to choose an app for which you do not have to wear it & # 39; at night, or to reserve another time to charge your watch . For other apps you may need your iPhone in bed, which is also an unwanted (and probably fairly unsafe) place to charge it.
Tracking sleep with the iPhone is possible, but there are many compromises. Sleep tracking apps
Because sleep is not a statistic specifically tracked by the Apple Watch, you must explore a third-party option in the App Store. For most of these apps, your iPhone must be used alongside your Apple Watch. Here are four options to try.
There is no absolute requirement to wear your Apple Watch in bed with the AutoSleep app. If you do this, it will use the watch's sensors to determine when you are sleeping and will then check the movement and heart rate to give a & # 39; morning sleep score. If you decide not to wear the watch while sleeping, the app uses your iPhone and only records the amount of time you sleep.
The app has consistently good reviews in the App Store and is one of the most popular sleep registrations. apps to download. However, to provide meaningful statistics, you must wear your Apple Watch and find another time to charge it.
Pillow also uses your iPhone and Apple Look together to keep track of sleep. If you decide not to wear your watch to bed, you must put your iPhone in bed with you. In this way it can follow night-time activities, including snoring and REM sleep, more effectively. Pillow also uses the telephone's microphone to record sounds during the night. If you wear the watch, heart rate measurement is introduced.
Some functions require an in-app purchase to unlock, but many of the functions are free and there is also a smart alarm clock, ready to wake you up just the right moment for your body. Remember not to charge your phone while it is in bed with you.
Promoted as a smart alarm clock, Sleepzy also tracks sleep when you wear the Apple Watch. It sets goals to meet sleep time, monitors sleep patterns, and produces white noise and sounds to help you fall asleep. There is a subscription package and this is needed to remove advertisements and introduce features such as data monitoring over time. Using the iPhone works like other sleep apps and records sounds, measures sleep quality and provides feedback on how to sleep better.
Sleep Watch is another app that both your iPhone and the Apple Watch can use to monitor sleep. When you wear the watch to bed, it automatically starts tracking when you fall asleep and has an extensive list of features on board. The data collected includes heart rate, REM sleep patterns, sleep disorders and more.
If you do not attach the Apple Watch, the iPhone will perform many of the same functions. Like some of the other apps, there is a subscription service for some premium features.
The other option
The Apple Watch is an excellent smart watch and a very capable health monitoring tool, but it is really not suitable for sleep monitoring. At least not yet. Apple will certainly introduce the feature at a certain stage – especially after the recent purchase of sleep technology company Beddit – but if you don't want to mess with apps and your iPhone in the meantime, there is another option to consider. Why not buy a reasonably priced fitness band with sleep registration and a heart rate sensor? If you are willing to set the watch and your iPhone to monitor sleep every night, putting on a fitness band is a little less difficult. Most also do not need to be charged often. The $ 40 Xiaomi Mi Smart Band 4 is an excellent example, just like the $ 100 Fitbit Inspire HR.
Alternatively, why not explore the world of non-portable sleep trackers? De Withings Sleep uses an app on your phone together with a special mat that goes under your mattress, or you can cut out the device completely and buy a mattress with built-in sleep registration.
Monitoring your sleep pattern with a view to improving them is just as important as ensuring that you exercise enough during the day. Do not limit yourself to the Apple Watch in an effort to gain a better understanding of your sleep.
