The Galaxy Z Flip open on its side

Today the company presented its second foldable in the Galaxy Z Flip on the Samsung Unpacked 2020. Unlike the Galaxy Fold, this phone does not turn into a large tablet, but rather it reverts to the glory days of the flip phone. And boys and girls, let me tell you: it is a badass small gadget.

To be honest, I have long been in the camp "ugh folding phones are stupid". The Motorola RAZR offered a cool bit of nostalgia, but I also don't like $ 1

500 nostalgia, so … yes, I'm out. The original Galaxy Fold is awkward, no matter how you use it – when folded it is not a great phone. When opened, it is not a great tablet. No matter how you cut it, it doesn't look fantastic.

But the Z Flip? The Z Flip just turned my mind about folding things in a hot minute. I started to think it was a stupid alternative to the RAZR and another novelty to actually see myself using one – all in the time frame of about 30 minutes. It is a sleek, stylish, sophisticated and simply amazing phone. I would buy one.

When you first look at the Z Flip, you really go back to the days of the flip phone (assuming you are old enough to remember the days) of the flip-phone, of course), with its glossy scale and small external display. Unlike the RAZR, the Z Flip doesn't really have a screen on the outside of the device – it looks more like a small ticker-type notification area. Usually it only shows the time, date and battery, but if you get a message, it will also scroll through it. It is a useful little addition to the phone and frankly I think this is a better choice than trying to put a very small touchscreen on the outside of the phone. Good phone call, Samsung.

To feel the hinge of this small foldable, it is also great because it feels really good . It's a bit stiff (okay, a lot stiff), so it's hard to open with one hand unless you have NBA player sized hands. But that is not without reason, because the hinge is designed more robust than the design in the Galaxy Fold. This also makes it more useful because it can be placed in any corner between open and closed.

And that's fair where some of the best features of the Z Flip lie because Samsung called a new mode for the device & # 39; Flex mode & # 39; has made. This allows certain apps to display split content along the telephone fold, providing an almost split screen. For example, you can watch a YouTube video on the top half of the screen while browsing through recommendations and comments at the bottom.

Flex mode is also available on the camera, so you can open the phone, set it to an angle and use it to take a selfie. Support for other apps in Flex mode is virtually non-existent at the moment, but Samsung has all the tools that developers need to enable their apps if they wish. I really hope that more developers will benefit from this because it is so much cooler than I expected. I know it sounds like a novelty, but only a few minutes with the YouTube app in Flex mode sold me.

Beyond all the hinge, fold godliness, the fully open form factor of this phone is also excellent. Inside the foldable housing is a 6.7-inch screen that does not feel like a 6.7-inch screen because it uses a fairly unusual aspect ratio of 22: 9. In other words, it's a lot narrower than most 6.7-inch phones. I dig the aspect ratio so hard. It looked really good in the limited time I spent with it, and I didn't see anything awkward given the aspect ratio – except perhaps the black bars on the sides of YouTube video & # 39; s in landscape mode, but that's so & # 39; n small problem "It is hardly worth mentioning.

Of course, once you're over there, it's not a super-luxury powerhouse like his S20 cousins announced today. You won't have a beaucoup RAM, a SD card slot or 45 cameras found on the Z Flip, which doesn't mean it's a bit slow – it has 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage and an unnamed 64-bit octa-core processor. that with a couple of 12 MP cameras & # 39; s on the back and a 10 MP front shooter, and you have everything for a tough, yet simplistic (according to modern standards) small phone.

For $ 1,380, the Z Flip isn't cheap, but it's still good ed cheaper than the fold and it also has a better design. If you miss that old-fashioned flip-phone atmosphere, I would honestly skip the RAZR and go straight to the Z Flip. It is currently easily the best foldable on the market.

The Z Flip is available from Friday, February 14 for $ 1,380.
