Instagram has three different account types: Personal, Business, and Creator. Which one to use depends on how you plan to use the “gram”.
What is a personal Instagram account?

We’ll take a look at the benefits of professional accounts in a moment, but there is one big benefit to personal accounts – you can set them to private. This means approving new followers and preventing strangers on the Internet from viewing all of your old photos.
While you don’t have to keep your Instagram account private (although I would probably recommend that), it’s nice to have the option. If you’re applying for a new job, in the middle of a bad break up or being harassed online, or just want to keep random people from seeing your photos for a few days, you can go private – then go again to public when things have calmed down.
What is an Instagram account for businesses?
Business Instagram accounts are one of two types of professional accounts. They are designed for real businesses, such as beauty salons and online stores, rather than individuals.
For the most part, a business account is just like a personal account. You can still post photos, share stuff in your story, and slide to people’s DMs. However, you have access to a number of company-specific features, including the ability to:
- post ‘Insights’ and analytics that let you see the reach of things you share, your follower growth and the like.
- promote messages and display advertisements.
- create Shopping messages associated with an online store.
- automatically schedule messages with apps like Later.
- have a sortable message inbox.
- have a “Contact” button and company category on your profile.
One quirk of Instagram Business Accounts is that you have to link yours to a Facebook page to show ads or sell products, even if you don’t plan on using Facebook for your marketing.
What is an Instagram Creator Account?
Instagram Creator accounts are the other type of Instagram Professional account. They roughly fall between personal and business accounts. They are designed for public figures, influencers, YouTubers, Etsy creators, and the like.
With a Creator account you can:
- see Post Insights, show ads, sort your inbox and create shoppable posts, like with a business account. You cannot schedule messages.
- hide your contact information and business category on your profile to make it look more like a personal account.
As with a business account, you still need to associate a Creator account with a Facebook page if you want to show ads or create posts that you can buy.
Which one should you get?
Instagram’s professional accounts are for people who use Instagram as part of their marketing plan and want to run ads and sell products, or who have such large followers that a sorted inbox and analytics are useful. You can convert your current Instagram account to a professional account.
For most people, the only Instagram account you need is a personal account. If you only have 100 or 200 followers, analytics won’t tell you much and will save you the hassle of setting up a Facebook page. It is a much better feature to be able to switch your account to private at any time.
