The new Chromecast represents an evolution of Google’s smart TV dongle and Android TV platform. In addition to a remote control and the ability to install apps, Chromecast with Google TV offers the debut of Google’s innovative Google TV interface, which will eventually make its way to Android TV.
The appeal of Google TV is that it consolidates the TV shows and movies from all of your streaming apps into one Netflix-like interface. A byproduct of this approach is that while the device is meant to run apps, the means to install apps are a bit buried. Here’s how to find it and install your favorite media apps.
: Scroll to Apps
Google wants you on it For you screen. You can access recommended content and your apps from this screen. It is a nice place to live.
But if you want to install apps, scroll to the top of the screen to the menu bar and then scroll right to the Apps section.
Step 2: Browse or search for an app
On the Apps page, a carousel of your installed apps is located at the top of the screen. Scroll past here to get it App categories row, followed by rows of managed apps. If you’re not specifically looking for something, these categories can track down an app you might find interesting.
If you are looking for a specific app, click on the ‘Search for apps’ option, which contains the Google Assistant logo. On the search screen, you get a keyboard to accurately type in your target app, along with a hint at the top of the screen to ask the Assistant for help.
Whether you type or speak your search query, the Assistant will perform the search. Do yourself a favor and press and hold the Assistant button on your remote to search with your voice.
If you’re lucky, Assistant will control the app you want. If there are multiple apps that could meet your demand, you will be presented with a range of options. Otherwise, if there is one app but it is not compatible, the Assistant will apologize instead of suggesting you alternatives. Are you feeling lucky?
Step 3: Install the app
Once you’ve landed on a compatible app, click the “Install” button to continue. The Play Store is doing its thing and when it’s done you get an Open button to jump right into the app.
Alternative method: Play Store website
You can also search for apps to install through it Play Store on your desktop browser. Once you find an app, hit the Install button and then click the drop-down menu to see if the Chromecast is one of the compatible devices. If so, select it and click the Continue button to proceed with the remote installation.
If not for the voice search assistant, I would advocate this approach as the primary method of installing apps on your Chromecast. If you want to install an app and you aren’t sitting in front of your TV, this is a useful alternative.
