iOS 13 and iPadOS: every important feature you need to know

iOS 13 is a fairly large update for your iPhone.

Jason Cipriani / CNET

Apple released iOS 13 and almost immediately released iOS 13.1 alongside iPadOS, specializing for tablets. iOS 13.1 came just days after the launch of the iPhone 11 iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max . With the release of iOS 13, Apple has made your iPhone faster, smarter and more secure. New features include the gesture-based QuickPath keyboard a tool to block unknown callers new photo editing tools and a special dark mode .

There are also new Maps tools that are finally closing the gap with Android, security features such as Logging in with Apple and the ability to customize Memoji avatars . New tools in iPadOS will also make your iPad more productive .

With iOS 13, Apple is up against Google & # 39; s Android 10 in the never-ending battle to be the most powerful, private, and easy-to-use operating system. Sounds dramatic, but with Android on around 90% of & # 39; s world phones, Apple must do its job to maintain its status and reputation.

iOS 13 beta & # 39; s best tricks to try

Apple's ability to engage buyers in iOS 13 is particularly important in 2019. The company has seen iPhone sales go slowly in line with competitors across the board.

Apple's latest iPhones are lagging behind Android rivals in key functions such as support for 5G speeds, but have overtaken new iPhone camera functions such as a stand-alone night mode for ultra-clear camera images. Over the years, Apple has proven that it can create indispensable software tools and apps such as FaceTime video and iMessage .

Here's everything you need to know about iOS 13, from getting it on your iPhone to the best features for your phone.

Stop unknown callers

With a single button you can effectively prevent unknown callers from calling your iPhone again . If the feature is enabled, iOS 13 only allows calls through your contacts and numbers in Mail or Messages. All others go straight to voicemail.

Faster Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Selection

For years we thought it would be wise if there was a way to connect to Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth devices from the Control Center, instead of that we open the Settings app and tap multiple times.

With iOS 13, Apple has finally made it possible to view and connect to available networks or devices without ever opening Settings. Hallelujah. For us this solves one of the most annoying peculiarities of the iPhone.

You don't have to be precise when it comes to QuickPath on iOS 13.

Jason Cipriani / CNET

That swipey keyboard

Android users have been wiping on their keyboards for years, using a number of third-party apps such as Swype and SwiftKey. Finally, Apple has added the option to trace a word to spell it.

Apple calls it QuickPath typing. In theory, it's faster than pecking on the virtual keyboard and just as accurate – and you still get spelling suggestions as you continue.

The feature is especially useful for one-handed typing and is ready for use as soon as you install iOS 13. Here is how to use QuickPath on iOS 13 . And we have found a solution that allows you to swear on the iPhone keyboard .

Dark mode for everyone

Dark mode which replaces the usual light screen with a dark screen, is available in the most important apps in iOS 13, including the calendar, music and photo apps.

This seems to be system-wide, but we have to see if there are exceptions. Dark mode is a popular trend with apps and will also come to Android Q . Here is all we know about the dark mode for the iPhone .

Uninstalling apps is a bit different

Now that Apple 3D Touch has been completely dumped on the iPhone 11, the way we remove and move apps across the home screen of our iPhones and iPads has changed.

Photo & # 39; s app adds video editing tools

The Photo & # 39; s app has undergone a major overhaul. Organizing and popping up photos is now easier and the editing tools have a new look. But the most impressive is the ability to use all the photo editing tools you are familiar with on videos in the Photos app.

Yes, that means you can apply filters, adjust the brightness and even crop a video in the Photo & # 39; s app. This is what you need to know about photos in iOS 13 .

That's right, with iOS 13 and iPadOS you can use a mouse to control your phone or tablet.

iPadOS gestures

The iPad grows into its own computer platform, and with it come numerous new gestures to bypass apps and the home screen. From opening multiple apps or quickly switching between workspaces, we have covered you on iPad gestures .

Hidden features

One of the best things about using new software is finding features that have not been announced. Often these functions are most noticeable in a major update, and iOS 13 has a fair share of hidden functions .

Of course it can take time to discover hidden functions, so at the moment our current number of hidden functions that is worth mentioning is 11. As we discover more, that list is definitely growing.

The volume indicator gets out of the way

Do you know how iOS has always had an annoying volume indicator that has taken over the screen and disturbs what you were looking at? Well, on iOS 13 that is gone. The volume indicator is minimal and gets out of the way – there's even a cool new trick for adjusting the volume .

Custom fonts in apps

Apple still limits the font selection for iOS as a whole. However, the company is opening iOS 13 to allow custom fonts in apps.

The added flexibility is perhaps an indication that Apple is losing its grip on controlling every aspect of the user experience. We haven't been able to see this yet, but rest assured, as soon as Apple starts publishing new fonts in the App Store, we're ready for it. This is all we know about installing, managing, and downloading custom iPhone fonts .

Find My Phone and Find My Friends join forces

Apple combined Find My Friends and Find My iPhone in a single app which is now called Find My . And in addition to combining the apps, Apple has added the ability to find lost devices for people you don't even know.

If you mark one of your Apple devices as lost, Apple will crowdsourcing the location of the device by asking all Apple devices to search for your device's Bluetooth signal. As soon as another Apple device finds your lost phone, tablet or computer, you will receive a notification. Apple says the free service is completely anonymous and encrypted.

Logging in with Apple does not share your email address

A new new privacy feature called Logging in with Apple logs you into accounts and apps without having to add your email address, according to Apple protects users against third-party apps they want to follow.

This is Apple & # 39; s version of logging in with Facebook and Google, with one major exception. These tools can be used to follow you online, but the version of Apple uses your iPhone or iPad to verify your login details when you log in.

You can also choose to share or hide your email address, and you can ask Apple to create a random email for the app or service that is forwarding to your actual email address, which your real identity is masked without having to use an unwanted account.

Apple also blocks apps that track your location via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and lets you decide if you want apps to request your permission whenever they request your location information.

Memoji stickers are everywhere.

Sarah Tew / CNET

Memoji avatars come to Messages, stickers

Apple & # 39; s Messaging apps now get support for Memoji profiles that show a miniature of your Memoji (an emoji of your face) in the Messages app is posted. New controls let you go in-depth with adjustment, makeup – even adding braces to your teeth. You also get a sticker package on all your iOS 13 devices.

iMessages will now also work on dual SIM phones (unfortunately we have no more detail than that).

Searching for messages is much smarter

With iOS 13, the ability to search in old message conversations has been greatly improved. You can now find links, photos & attachments, attachments and even text in a message thread that is a few months old.

Memories have a new look

Memories look completely new and it is so much smarter. You can even tell it to remind you something the next time you talk to a contact in Messaging.

Share ETA is a convenient way to let your friends know when you arrive.

Apple Maps Enhancements

There is now a Google Street View-like feature called Look Around and a new feature that lets you share your ETA with a loved one so you'll never feel bad about it unexpectedly late again.

Share music or a movie with a second pair of AirPods

Instead of giving one of your AirPods to a friend or loved one so they can hear what you're listening to, you can now tell your iPhone to stream audio to two few AirPods thanks to Audio Sharing. And if you used Apple Pay to buy something, you are already a professional at Audio Share .

Practically working on Apple & # 39; s CarPlay update in iOS 13

Sharing photos and links is now different

Every time you tap the Share button to share a photo or link, you use the iOS sheet for sharing. And from iOS 13 that magazine has become smarter. Now contacts and apps are suggested to share with. It has also been re-organized in a new list of iPhone shortcuts and promotions which can be a bit confusing.

Siri finds a new voice

Apple & # 39; s voice assistant Siri receives an audio update in iOS 13 . Instead of the clipped tones that are often associated with AI, Apple hopes that the new Siri will sound smoother and more natural to your ears. With the help of a neural talk-to-speak network, Siri speaks with fewer gaps and less inhuman sounding modulations.

Siri of iOS 13 also works better with AirPods ($ 144 at Amazon) the HomePod ($ 299 at Walmart) CarPlay and Safari:

  • You can create personalized shortcuts using a new shortcut app.
  • Siri reads messages as they arrive and you can respond immediately.
  • Deliver a phone call or music from your iPhone to your HomePod.
  • CarPlay: Smart suggestions from Siri work here, such as suggesting that you open your garage door when you come close to home.
  • Siri suggestions come to the Safari browser.
