iOS 14.6 is out now: every new feature to know about

4.6 appears to be a much smaller update than 14.5 – including the ability to unlock your iPhone with it Face ID while wearing a mask, stop apps from tracking you for advertising purposes and choose from four different Siri voices. The new iOS 14.6 includes a different way to locate lost items AirTags trackers and high fidelity Apple Music support, like bug fixes.

How can I download iOS 14.6?

You should get a prompt saying iOS 14.6 is now available and ask if you want to download it. Or you can do the following:

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Select General.

3. Crane Software update.

Your device will connect to Apple’s servers and prompt you to download and install the update. Follow the prompts to complete the installation. When your device reboots, iOS 14.6 will be running. (Check out our full instructions on how to prepare your phone and download iOS 14 here.)

What devices does iOS 14.6 work on?

iOS 14.6 is compatible with the same devices as iOS 14. Generally, this includes the iPhone 6S ($ 269 on eBay) all the way up through the iPhone 12, along with the iPhone SE ($ 99 at Back Market) and the seventh generation iPod Touch ($ 170 at Amazon). What new features does iOS 14.6 include?

The latest control software update is smaller and focuses on changes under the hood. This is what we saw in the public beta of the software.

Add a contact email address when your AirTag is in lost mode

If you are one of Apple’s new AirTag tracker devices (here is how to set up your AirTags), you may know that if you lose the item that the AirTag is associated with, you can put the tag in lost mode and be notified when it is within range Find my network. If someone else finds your AirTag, they can use an iPhone or other NFC device to view your contact number and contact you. The latest version of the iOS 14.6 beta adds the ability to enter a contact email address instead of a phone number.

Apple Card family

iOS 14.6 also marks the launch of Apple Card family. With this addition, you can share your Apple Card with up to five people (aged 13 or older) in your Family Sharing group. With Apple Card Family, families can track expenses, manage expenses with the option to add limits and controls, and build credit.

Better beta tools

The beta versions of iOS 14.6 include a tool for testing app developers and public beta testers upgrade to an iOS release candidate without removing their developer or beta profile. Before iOS 14.5 went live to the public, developers could choose between upgrading their device to the iOS 14.5 release candidate or to the beta version of iOS 14.6. Under the Software Update menu in Settings there is a new Also available section where you can find this option.

Hi-Fi support for Apple Music

On May 17, Apple said it would happen in June add support for high quality, lossless and spatial audio to Apple Music via Dolby Atmos without extra costs. Hi-Fi streaming could help Apple Music compete with Spotify, which it said it was in February add a high fidelity level sometime this year.
