Thursday – New Year’s Eve – the Senate made little visible progress in boosting the $ 600 payments President Donald Trump approved $ 2,000 on Sunday. When the new senate met on Sunday, Jan. 3, Senate Leader Chuck Schumer urged his fellow senators to vote now on the larger amount.

Just give us a vote on the Bill taken by the house so that we can now get help to those who need it badly, ”Schumer said on the Senate floor on Thursday. We can do it today. At the end of the day, however, it was unclear if and when the Senate would vote on the $ 2,000 bill on Friday or Saturday.

Senate Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday introduced his own version of the $ 2000 bill that would link the larger payments to a repeal of Section 230 and the creation of an advisory committee that would study “ the integrity and governance ” of the November general election, two areas in which Trump requested the Senate address after signing the law the federal budget of $ 2.3 trillion and the COVID bill Sunday night.

Democrats pushed back, asking McConnell to let the Senate vote on the House bill that only deals with the $ 2,000 amount. “Everyone understands that if you combine all three elements, this is a poison pill designed to kill that legislation,” Senator Bernie Sanders said on the Senate floor on Thursday.

McConnell said he joined the items as a way to address Trump’s top three concerns simultaneously. “The Senate is not going to split the three issues that have linked President Trump just because the Democrats don’t dare to tackle two,” he said on the Senate floor on Wednesday.

It is up to the Senate whether or not to raise the $ 600 incentive vouchers to $ 2,000. The House agreed on Monday to increase the $ 600 stimulus payments in the new COVID emergency bill to the larger amount. But time is running out, and the Senate also plans to vote to override Trump’s veto on the defense spending bill on Friday or Saturday before it is suspended on Sunday.

The $ 600 stimulus check is part of it the two-party package that renews programs both Democrats and Republicans agree are critical, including $ 300 Weekly Federal Unemployment Benefits, money to help small businesses meet their employees’ payroll, a month-long extension to the end of January of a federal deportation ban, and help to corona vaccine.

President-elect Joe Biden called the stimulus portion of the joint package a “ first step and down payment, ” predicting a higher bill after he sworn in — including a third stimulus check. Here’s how we got here and what could happen next.

House voted in favor of the second $ 2,000 stimulus check on Monday

The House of Representatives passed the CASH Act (pdf) to pass the $ 2,000 second incentive payment for every qualifying adult and dependent Monday and sent it to the Senate for consideration. It is not clear when the legislation will be put to a vote in the Senate and whether it can be passed. The larger amount has received support from the Republican side, with sens. David Purdue and Kelly Loeffler – who are both on the ballot for the Georgia election in January – tweet their support for $ 2,000 checks.

Democrats advocate all summer and fall for a bigger one second stimulus control as part of a wider aid package. Trump distanced himself from the negotiations and his administration’s negotiator, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, offered the $ 600 ceiling for the second stimulus control totals.

Republican and Democratic lawmakers approved the two-in-one omnibus package by overwhelming margins on Dec. 21, after months of frustrating on-and-off negotiations.

Why didn’t the bill include a second $ 1,200 or $ 2,000 stimulus check?

A second stimulus control has had widespread bipartisan support since the CARES Act was passed. In recent months, everyone from Trump and Biden to members of Congress, economists and ordinary people have argued for another direct payment.

Trump has previously called for “more money than they are talking about” in stimulus checks as large as $ 1,200 or $ 2,000 per person. Aides allegedly convinced him at the time that making such demands would jeopardize a stimulus bill, The Washington Post reported, and the White House offer was officially extended to $ 600.

While many are in favor of a $ 1,200 direct payment in theory, a second smaller stimulus check has helped keep costs below the $ 1 trillion mark that Republican lawmakers said in the past they would support.

Stimulus control isn’t cheap. The IRS said this summer it had spent $ 270 billion sending 160 million checks, and on Dec.15, Senator Mitt Romney, a Republican involved in drafting the bipartisan stimulus proposal, predicted a cost of $ 300 billion if the checks were again included at $ 1,200 per person. Republicans reportedly curbed the charges.
