Marvel’s Fantastic Four: Everything We Know About The Super Team’s MCU Debut

The Thing, Invisible Woman, Mr. Fantastic and the Human Torch are coming to the MCU.

Marvel comic books

Like WandaVision brings the Marvel Cinematic Universe excitement about Disney Plus, you may be wondering what upcoming movies are. We know the Fantastic Four are coming to MCU since Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige checked the super team by name San Diego Comic-Con 2019 to Marvel parent company Disney got the rights in his Fox takeover

Then Feige dropped a major update during the Disney Plus event last December – the studio is making a new Fantastic Four movie, and it is accompanied by Jon Watts (director of Spider-Man: Homecoming Far from home and their upcoming sequel

This movie is still in the early stages of production, but a member of the group may have been shouted out episodes 5 and 6 from WandaVisionLet’s find out who the Fantastic Four are, the possible casting and release date, and run through the characters’ movie history (ugh).

The base

Conveniently, the intro to the 90s animated series sketches the origins and strengths of the team in a super catchy way.

You’re welcome. Now that you’re tapping your feet, we’ll cover the basics. The team first appeared in 1961’s Fantastic Four No. 1, through late comic legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. This was basically the beginning of the Marvel Comics universe as the pair co-created the Avengers and the X-Men shortly after.

This issue started it all.

Marvel comic books

In the first issue, Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm shoot into space with an experimental rocket. They are bombarded with cosmic rays (which is real), giving them a range of cool super powers (not real).

  • Reed can stretch his body to almost any shape and takes the code name Mr. Fantastic. He is also super smart.
  • Sue can become invisible and create powerful force fields. She initially passes by Invisible Girl, but later turns it into the more dignified Invisible Woman. Also Reed’s fiancé.
  • Johnny can cover his body in flames, control fire and fly. Known as the Human Torch. He is Sue’s brother, and his catchphrase is “Flame on!”
  • Ben turns into a rock monster and takes on the name with super strength and stamina. Is furious at first, but softens over time. Glorious slogan: “It’s clobberin ‘time!” He is fairly good

They fight the Mole Man in that first issue, but soon put on a rogue gallery with the Skrulls (who joined the MCU in Captain Marvel), the angry sea dweller Namor the Sub-Mariner, the planet-guzzled Galactus and his herald the Silver Surfer, Kree ruk Ronan the Accuser and Negative Zone ruler Annihilus. But one bad guy is above all.

Check out how cool Doctor Doom is!

Marvel comic books

Doctor Doom, also known as Victor Von Doom, was Stan Lee’s favorite villain as he is the ruler of his Latveria homeland. He first appeared in 1962’s Fantastic Four # 3, was Reed’s rival in college, and ignored his advice about a bug in a machine he was working on. The resulting explosion ruined Doom’s face, and he wore a signature mask to hide his disfigurement.

Like Reed, Doom is a super-smart scientist. Together with his mask, he forged an advanced armor, which fills the vacancy left after Tony Stark’s fate Avengers: EndgameHe has a bunch of robot doppelgangers – Doombots – who can take the trap in place if heroes defeat him.

Aside from his scientific prowess, Doom is a powerful wizard, so he could take it Dr. Strange to. In the comics, he took ultimate power in both the 1985 and 2015 storylines of Secret Wars – he’s one of the few villains worthy of taking on the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. There is no guarantee that Doom will actually appear in the first MCU Fantastic Four, but it’s so damn cool and iconic that it should appear in some form or another.

In 2017, Legion creator Noah Hawley said he was working on it a Doctor Doom movie, but it’s likely that plan was shelved or changed when Disney bought Fox. In early 2020, he expressed hope that his script would fit Marvel Studios’ plan for the character, but noted at the time that he hadn’t heard anything.

There’s no word on casting yet, but fans have been asking for it for a long time The officeis John Krasinski to play Reed and Edge of tomorrowEmily Blunt becomes Sue. The real man and woman already played a couple on the screen in 2018 A quiet place, so it would be excellent to see them bring that dynamism to the MCU.

Date of publication

You will have to be patient as this movie has no release date yet. Marvel’s schedule of upcoming movies and shows for 2021 and 2022 is already full, and Watts is still working on the third MCU Spidey adventure. It will likely be 2023 before Fantastic Four hits theaters.

Earlier movies

The first attempt to bring the team to the silver screen came in 1994’s The Fantastic Four, which involved B movie legend Roger Corman. This was an origin story for the characters, but never released – it looks a bit like the Star Wars Holiday Special of Marvel movies – but there are conflicting stories as to why. If you’re curious, it’s on YouTube and not that bad.

The Fantastic Four of 2015 is not worth your time.

20th Century Fox

The team’s first truly cinematic outing took place in 2005’s Fantastic Four, directed by Tim Story, With Future Captain America Chris Evans as Johnny. Jessica Alba played Sue, Ioan Gruffudd was Reed, and Michael Chiklis played Ben. Doom was played by Julian McMahon and this origin story was disappointing. This came out the same year as Batman Begins, and Fantastic Four seemed like a throwback to crazy superhero movies.

That didn’t stop it from getting a sequel in 2007, Rise of the Silver Surfer. This movie brought in the great Silver Surfer (played by Doug Jones and voiced by Laurence Fishburne), but still wasn’t great. It’s also infamous for depicting Galactus as a cosmic storm rather than its traditional comic book form.

The franchise rebooted in 2015, with director Josh Trank at the helm. That movie had a great cast – Miles Teller as Reed, Kate Mara as Sue, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny, Jamie Bell as Ben, and Toby Kebbell as Doom – but it turned out to be a joyless mess. Since then, Trank said he has no interest in directing any more Marvel or DC movies.

Let’s hope Marvel Studios’ effort, when we see it, finally gives the Fantastic Four the cinematic outing they deserve. We trust in Feige.
