With the imminent arrival of the HoloLens 2 now expected every day, Microsoft is preparing new users to take advantage of the software from day 1.
This week, Microsoft uploaded a series of self-study videos & # 39; s to its YouTube channel for Dynamics 365 Guides, an AR app for companies that allows companies to write step-by-step AR workflows or guides to guide employees through complex tasks and then measure performance to improve processes.
The Guides app was originally unveiled alongside the HoloLens 2 in February, but the self-study videos & # 39; s give business a little more insight into how the app works.
After an animated overview of guides, a few video & # 39; s users lead through the design process, which starts via a PC before moving on to the HoloLens app.
On the PC, users specify the anchoring method (more on this later), set the structure for the process, add step-by-step instructions, and upload media and 3D models to follow the steps if necessary.
During the HoloLens phase, users anchor the guide, place holograms in the workspace, add dashed lines and other 3D content, and test the guide.
The following two videos in the sequence of address anchors for tracking the AR content. The Guides app supports two types of anchors: printed and digital.
The preferred method is the printed anchor, which contains Microsoft's proprietary version over the QR code, a three-by-three grid with circles with different patterns in it. The digital anchor uses object recognition to identify a component in the workflow, such as machine parts.
This means that a 3D model of an object must be compared, which can be converted from CAD drawings to a glTF or CAP file format and then uploaded during the PC phase of the process, with a real version of that object.
Microsoft also records a video for the end user. This chapter of the series shows users how to operate the app, including how to use the can cursor to select menu items, how to scan an anchor and how instruction steps can be secured in the room.
The final of the series covers the Business Intelligence functions of Guides. The software includes a dashboard where managers can view each session to see how long the process takes and which steps take the longest to allow the user to identify workflow inefficiencies.
Managers can then share their findings with the author, who is the guide for better understanding, or use the information to refresh the work process itself.
HoloLens 2 is already forming to be the best augmented reality headset on the market at its release.
But it seems that, despite a busy field with a multitude of options, Microsoft may also have the best suite of enterprise-grade apps that go with it.
