Not all video games transfer properly to the movie screen. Some are famously bad ̵

In fact, the first feature film version of Mortal Kombat was from 1995 cited by CNET as “the best of the worst”, and critics pledged the 1997 sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. But Hollywood likes to try again, so get ready for the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie, due out this spring.

When and how to watch

Mortal Kombat has been a long time coming – the first two films were released in the 1990s, but after the second was such a bombshell, the third film fell into limbo. This restart comes almost a quarter of a century after that disaster.

Theatrical releases are still questionable in early 2021 thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, but Warner Bros. still hopes some moviegoers will be able to watch all the action on the big screen. Mortal Kombat is scheduled for release in theaters and on the HBO Max streaming service on April 16.

What do we know about Mortal Kombat?

The movies first trailer came out in February and is packed with over-the-top gory deaths that the Mortal Kombat game was famous for. It’s hard to imagine another movie where a character (Sub-Zero, played by Joe Taslim) freezes the blood that sprays from an injured opponent, grabs that blood spray like a bloody icicle and stabs the enemy with it.

How do you turn a video game into a movie plot? Warner Bros. describes it as a bit of an underdog story. Here’s the official description, but warning: if you’re not a gamer, you can get lost in the name list.

MMA fighter Cole Young, used to getting beaten for money, is unaware of his origins – or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an alien Cryomancer, to take on Cole. For safety, Cole looks for Sonya Blade in the direction of Jax, a Major of the Special Forces who carries the same strange dragon that Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself in the temple of Lord Raiden, a Elder God and protector of Earthrealm, who bestows sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano as he prepares to rise with Earth’s greatest champions Against the enemies of Outworld in a battle for the highest stakes universe. The cast may not be familiar to those who see mostly American films, but a number of experienced Asian actors are in the film and both Lewis Tan and Joe Taslim are also martial artists, which seems like a valuable experience for this film.

If you want to play the latest game from the Mortal Kombat universe while you wait for the movie, you’re in luck. A new downloadable Kombat Pack for Mortal Kombat 11 came out in November, and Sylvester Stallone voices his iconic John Rambo character.

Mortal Kombat 11 came out in 2019, but has added countless fighters, from an original list of 24 to the current 37.
