We all have a few chatty WhatsApp groups or contacts that we can’t block and don’t want to keep a constant eye on. Fortunately, WhatsApp offers a middle ground for this and you can easily mute them forever.

When you mute a contact or group on WhatsApp, you will not be notified of new messages from them. However, they will still appear in your chat list and you can continue to talk to them regularly. The members of that group or contact are also not notified of this, unlike when you leave a group.

First, make sure you have the latest version of WhatsApp installed on your Android smartphone or iPhone by going to the Play Store or App Store listing.

Open the “WhatsApp” app on your phone and enter the chat you want to mute in the “Chats” tab.

Go to the Chats tab on WhatsApp

Tap the group or contact name at the top to view their profile page.

On the next screen, enable the “Mute Notifications” option.

In the next popup, you can adjust how long you want the group or contact to be muted. Choose from the three defined time periods. Once this period has passed, WhatsApp will automatically turn off the chat.

Choose “Always” to mute it forever.

Select

If you check the box ‘Show notifications’, alerts for new messages from the selected chat will be shown in your notifications, but they will be silent and your phone will not make a sound.

Tap the “OK” button to confirm the action. When you do this, the conversation will have a new muted icon next to the item in the chat list.

Keep in mind that this only applies to texts of the person or group. You will still be notified if they make a voice or video call to you.

If mute doesn’t work and you’re tired of a contact or group, you can block a WhatsApp chat altogether as a last resort.
