New Party for Anti-Trump Republicans? This is what we know so far

Could a new movement take the Republican party away from Donald Trump?

James Martin / CNET

A group of Republican leaders, frustrated by the direction its party has taken since Donald Trump was nominated for president, is trying to rededicate the GOP to its foundational ideals. The group, led by Republican and independent leaders, announced its intention in a public statement entitled A Call for American Renewal. More than 150 leaders have joined.

“We will not wait forever for the GOP to clean up its act,” tweeted Miles Taylor, a founder of the movement, after releasing the five-page document outlining the group’s concerns and goals. “If we can’t save the Republican Party from itself, we’ll help save America from extremist elements in the Republican Party.”

This is what the group hopes to achieve and who is in it. Why would Republicans want to form a new movement or a new party?

The movement describes itself as consisting of local, state and national leaders. Its members seek to form a “common sense coalition” that will work to overcome the “divisions and political extremism” of the current political system.

“There is a cohort of people who want an ‘I’m not crazy’ coalition that they can join,” said Taylor, who is also the author of a New York Times op-ed criticizing the government. -Trump during the term of the 45th president The piece was attributed to “Anonymous,” who at the time was described as a high-ranking official of the administration.

Concerns among some Republicans about the direction of their party are not new. Trump’s 2016 candidacy sparked a small, loosely-formed group of Never Trumpers that ranged from party leaders to newspaper columnists, fighting to avoid nominating the real estate mogul and reality TV star.

Who supports the new political movement?

Republican and independent political leaders who signed the declaration include former members of Congress (such as Virginia Rep. Barbara Comstock), former governors (e.g., New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman), members of the Trump administration (Trump White House Director of Communications Anthony Scaramucci, among others) and political commentators (including Bill O’Reilly).

Can the new anti-Trump group successfully create a movement or even a new party?

Dissatisfaction within a political party is nothing new. For example, the Tea Party movement that started around 2009 called on the Republican Party to adopt a more fiscally conservative policy. On the left, supporters of the Green New Deal have been pushing Democrats to focus on climate change since 2019.

At the national level, creating a new third party would have to be an uphill battle to become viable. The hold that the Democratic and Republican parties have over the national political structure – and the winner of everything from the Electoral College – works to prevent a third party from gaining ground.
