How to deal with an error message

When the IRS rolled out on the tool last spring, you may see confusing messages when using the status app. To help explain the messages, the IRS has created an FAQ explaining common status messages. We also received some confusing messages during our early check-ups. This can happen if it is impossible to determine your eligibility, such as if your payment status is unavailable because many people are trying to access the tool. Here are some initial reasons Get My Payment may not be able to track your payment status, although the IRS has since said it has improved its tool.

Can you set up direct deposit with the tool?

For the first checks, you can use the Get My Payment tool to provide the IRS with your bank details to have your check sent via direct deposit. According to the IRS FAQ for the second check, the answer is no. “Your payment information cannot be changed. If you do not receive a payment and are eligible to receive one, it can be claimed on your 2020 tax return as the chargeback credit.”

We have asked the U.S. Treasury and the IRS for additional clarification.

This handy USPS email tracking service keeps track of the email checks

If your the second stimulus check comes in in the mailthe US Postal Service has a free app that can let you know when it’s about to deliver your incentive money from the IRS. Called Informed Delivery, the email tracking service automatically scans your letters and can notify you when they arrive. Here’s more about it how to set up and use the USPS letter tracking service to keep an eye on your payment.

The IRS will send you a letter confirming that your second payment has been sent

On the first check, the IRS sent a mail to a taxpayer’s last known address within 15 days of the payment being sent to notify them of the payment. The letter included information about when and how payment was made, and how to report to the IRS if you did not receive your check. The IRS said it is also sending a letter for the second checks. Hold the letter if you don’t receive your payment to claim your money later.
