Owners of Oculus Quest will be happy to hear that their headsets are about to get even better. After a major update a few weeks ago, Oculus today announced software v29 with mixed reality overlay and recording on iPhone, phone notifications in the headset and much more.

This is a major update packed with features. That said, it̵

7;s the new “Live Overlay” mode that allows owners to easily add and capture mixed reality with nothing more than an iPhone. Basically, being able to put yourself in the game and then watch or capture a video of the game in this way.

Previously, if you wanted to put yourself in a VR game or app, you had to plug in a powerful PC, camera, plug everything in, and even use a green screen. None of that is ideal, of course, which is why Oculus update v29 allows you to do it with an iPhone.

According to Oculus, this will work with the iPhone XS or later and any VR app that supports casting and recording. The update also adds support to record everything you say with the built-in microphone. That way, users can capture their voice while recording a clip.

Another nice new addition is the ability to record your phone notifications in the headset. This way, you don’t have to take off the Oculus headset to see an incoming text message or email on your phone. Instead, pair your iPhone with the headset and see everything important as soon as it arrives. This is for iOS only, but Oculus has confirmed it’s on the way for Android too.

Additionally, Oculus adds some features to the original Quest that recently came to the Quest 2, such as multi-user accounts and app sharing. That way, more than one person can use and enjoy the same headset. And no, secondary accounts will not see your phone notifications.

Finally, a Files app will appear in your app folder after this update. A dedicated files app allows you to download and upload media files “to and from your favorite websites” using the headset browser. And last but not least, Oculus has added a shortcut for its Passthrough feature. That way you can quickly switch Passthrough to see the real world without taking off the headset.

This is a major update, but keep in mind that Oculus is rolling it out gradually so it may take a while to see it on your device.
