Print to PDF in Windows

Printing to PDF has not always been easy in Windows. MacOS and Linux users have supplied a PDF printer as standard for more than a decade and a number of browsers have been making it easy for a while. But don't worry: Microsoft eventually added the feature to Windows 10, and this should now be enabled by default.

Here is our comprehensive overview of printing to PDF in Windows. We also have other handy manuals, including how to password-protect a PDF, convert a PDF to Excel, and combine PDF files.

Using custom tools in Windows 10

Step 1: Go to print document as you would normally, and select Microsoft Print to PDF as your printer.

Step 2: You will be asked where you want to save the resulting file. Choose the location and a name and click on OK . After a few seconds you have a brand new PDF.

Using an external application

Although the latest version of Microsoft's operating system makes it very easy to print to PDF in Windows 10, older versions of Windows may not, and users may want access to more advanced options such as it's about managing their print-to-PDF settings. In these cases, third-party software can offer an alternative way to "print" your documents in PDF form.

Adobe Acrobat

If you have Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer, you still have a print-to-PDF option. This is great for those who use Windows 7 or 8, as neither operating system is pre-installed with a PDF printer. Although it is an expensive tool, a free trial version is available for those looking for a short-term solution.

After installation, go to the document printer as usual and select Adobe PDF as your printer.

For those of you without Adobe Acrobat or Windows 10, rest assured you can still print to PDF with the right PDF converter, even if the process is a bit trickier is. We recommend the free doPDF converter, which you can download from the developer's official website.

We prefer this software because, unlike similar software, it does not force you to download random add-ons or malware. It also works with both Windows 7 and the latest iterations from Windows 8, as well as with Windows 10.

Click on the green Download now when you go to the website! button, located directly under Free PDF Converter . A paid commercial version is also available with overlays, digital signatures, coding and more.

After the download is complete, go to your folder Downloads and run the doPDF installer – it will appear as an executable file. Then install the optional add-on for Microsoft Office or clear the check box to stay with the basics (recommended).

Step 1: Start the application in the same way as any other piece of software. Make sure that you are on the tabs at the top Make one document . Here you see a section with the text Create a PDF immediately . The printer selection must be automatically set to doPDF, which you can leave.

Step 2: Click the Browse button and choose which file you want to convert PDF.

Step 3: After you have selected a file, click on Create and choose a storage location for your new PDF. Then click on OK to complete. Keep in mind that doPDF has also created a "printer" option that you can select in other documents to create a PDF version of it, similar to how the Microsoft Word option works.
