Update, May 4, 2021 (2:48 PM ET): It seems that Reddit is currently not available to many around the world. According to Down Detector, outages have been reported in the past half hour. Hopefully the site will be backed up again soon so you can check out the latest memes.
Original article: If you’re trying to cast some upvotes or measure something with a banana, you might be disappointed to find out that Reddit isn’t working. It’s something that rarely happens, so that can come as a shock. A malfunction is often the cause of this, but it can also be a problem with the app on your phone. Here’s a quick guide to troubleshooting any Reddit issues you might be experiencing.
Is Reddit down for you?
- Check if Reddit is not available to everyone
- Check your internet connection
- Make sure there are no problems with the app
- Restart your phone
- Report any issues you are experiencing
1. Is Reddit not available?
If Reddit is the only app or site that doesn’t work for you, chances are it won’t be available to others as well. Before trying the other steps listed below make sure that this is not a glitch.
Down Detector is a good tool to use. You can search for Reddit on the site or go directly to the Reddit page. You will see a message saying “possible problems with Reddit” or “problems with Reddit” if the problem is widespread. You can also report problems.
Reddit also keeps you updated on the site status. Head over to Reddit Status to see information on anything that helps keep it up and running. You can also tap the ‘subscribe to updates’ button in the top right corner to get notified in case something goes wrong.
2. Check your internet connection

If the Reddit app or website doesn’t load, check if there’s something wrong with your internet connection. You may experience problems with your home Wi-Fi connection or with your mobile data plan. You can check if the connection is the problem by simply opening another site on your PC or phone browser. If nothing loads, your internet is turned off.
On your phone, go to the Quick settings drop-down menu and toggle the data connection off and on. Make sure you are in an area with a good network signal. If the data connection is still lost, you should contact your network provider.
If there is a problem with your Wi-Fi router, it is usually enough to reboot it. If that doesn’t work, we have a helpful troubleshooting guide you should check out.
3. Make sure there are no app problems
If the status checkers show that there are no issues with Reddit and that your internet connection is fine, you may run into some app problems. Try to force close and restart the app. If that doesn’t work, the best option is to uninstall and reinstall the app from the Google Play Store. Also make sure that the Reddit app is updated to the latest version.
4. Restart your phone
As with many technical issues, the simplest and most effective solution is to restart the device. The same idea works here too. Restart your phone or laptop and see if the problem goes away.
5. Report any problems you are experiencing
If you’ve tried everything on the list and Reddit still doesn’t work, you can report the bug or issue directly to the developers. Go to r / bugs and list the problem you are dealing with with the site or phone app. You will also see an ongoing list of bug fixes, updates and known issues with the mobile apps in r / redditmobile.
