Rename your original sound to make your TikTok video more shareable «Smartphones :: Gadget Hacks

TikTok is a video platform first, and while visual content is critical to its popularity, what has brought many of these videos to millions and millions of views is not just what you see, but also what you hear.

Many viral videos on TikTok are accompanied by sounds, which can be mishmash of popular songs, remixes, sound effects, movie dialogs, original audio and more. Usually it is the sound that drives the content of the video, be it someone dancing in unison to a song or lip-syncing to the dialogue.

While creating these original sounds takes some work, marketing the sound and making it viral is a whole different beast. Luckily, there is an easy way to make your unique sound more shareable, and just tap it a few times.

Instead of allowing TikTok to name your unique sound, you can edit it so that you can include other important information in the title, such as the song name, song artist, your own name, username for social media and more. That way, when your sound is shared, other people can get a better picture of your sound and you, the creator.

Step 1
: Add your sound to TikTok

The way you add your original sound to your video is up to you, but there are several options. The easiest and most common way is to record audio while recording video in TikTok. Audio is picked up from your smartphone’s microphone while you are recording a video and it is uploaded as an original sound.

However, you can still create an original sound without recording sound within TikTok. With an unlimited number of editing services on your computer, tablet or smartphone, you can create your own unique sounds using song clips, sound effects and more.

If you create your own unique sound, you can add the music to any video, including a black screen, and upload it to TikTok so you can use the sound. Instead of making it public, you can upload it as private and then make another TikTok video – of you dancing or whatever – with the sound you just created and uploaded.

Step 2: Rename your sound

By default, TikTok names any sound you upload as’ original sound – [your username]. This is usually fine if you just want your username in the title. But if you want other information, such as a song or artist title, a different username (for other social media accounts), or other important details, you should rename your sound.

To do this, find and play the video you uploaded with your original sound. Tap the spinning vinyl icon at the bottom right, where your unique sound lives. If you cannot select it, please wait for a few minutes as it may take a while for the sound to load. Then tap the edit icon at the end of your default sound name at the top of the page.

Now type what you want to name your sound. You can’t use symbols like @, – or (), but you can write something like ‘Route 73 by XxTxTxT on Soundcloud’ to name the sound, artist and where it can be listened to (if it’s a song).

It should be noted that whatever you enter, your TikTok username will disappear from the sound title (after the hyphen) and replace with ‘@[your name]. If your account name (usually your first name) is different from your username, you can include your username in the audio title or change your name to your username.

If you are using music or other audio from an artist or movie, you may see “contains music from:” in your audio title with the appropriate name or title after it. There’s no way to remove this, but it’s just a way for TikTok to appropriately credit creators for their sound.

Finally, before clicking ‘Save’ at the top right, it is important to make sure that your new sound title is exactly what you want because you can only rename your original sound once

Step 3: Use your renamed sound

If you want to reuse your newly renamed sound and the original video is blank, you can do so from the sound’s unique page by tapping the vinyl icon at the bottom right of your video. At the bottom of the sound page, tap “Use this sound” and make a video with the sound.

Once your new video has been uploaded, you will see the new audio title scrolling on the left at the bottom of the screen. As mentioned earlier, your username will disappear from the title, but your tagged name with an @ before it will appear after the title.
