Roku’s new customizable remote can’t arrive soon enough – Review Geek

Roku Streambar voice remote control

You are probably familiar with the iconic Roku remote and the four seemingly random media buttons that take you to three services you don̵

7;t use and maybe one you do. It is extremely annoying to lose all that space for buttons you don’t need. But now Roku is testing an updated Voice Remote Pro that lets you customize two buttons – and it has a rechargeable battery.

Unfortunately, you cannot buy the Voice Remote Pro that easily. And that’s a shame, because according to Reddit user u / Kingtut206, the controller has a number of useful features. If you lost the controller back on the couch, you can use voice control to activate the remote lost search feature. And the name suggests, it also has several other voice command options.

But most exciting of all, you’re not stuck with the four media buttons it comes with (Netflix, Hulu, etc). It also has two customizable buttons that you can assign to the services you actually use. About time! The controller still comes with four preset buttons as it makes Roku money. But just above the usual useless buttons, you will find a “1” and a “2” button that you can set on the services you use.

There are downsides, of course, starting with the $ 30 price tag and the MicroUSB port. It would be nice if Roku fully embraced modern ideals and moved to USB-C. But the biggest drawback is availability. Namely, there really isn’t one. Currently, Roku is doing an early test with limited access, selling 2,000 remotes to lucky chosen users.

But if anyone can buy it, we’ll let you know. Hopefully Roku will upgrade the remote to USB-C by then.
