Gift one for Google Play Music, Google, and Android’s official music platform from 2011 to 2020. As of Thursday this week, Google disabled all features on each platform and the website is now redirecting users to YouTube Music. Long-time users of the service regret its loss due to less functionality on YTM.
Google Play Music initially started out as an alternative to iTunes, a centralized place for Android users to purchase individual songs and albums in MP3 format. But it made headlines by letting users upload thousands of songs from their personal collections to Google̵
GPM users were amply warned in advance that the service was discontinuing, as Google offered to move their existing music collections to the new YouTube Music. But many of them weren’t too happy with the arrangement as YouTube Music’s interface is much more focused on discovering videos and music than just playing the music you already have.
I wouldn’t say Google Play Music was the best in its business, but it was certainly one of the best options on the market in terms of value thanks to that server upload option. And for an app that came pre-installed on most Android phones in the world, it was very good indeed. Rest in peace, GPM. We will miss you.
