As expected, Samsung announced its new regular telephone line at today's Unpacked event in San Francisco. The Galaxy S20, S20 + and S20 Ultra, all with standard 5G radio, will be available in the US from 6 March. These will be the more conventional Samsung designs, as opposed to the bombastic new folding phone shown at the Oscars.
The cheapest Galaxy S20, without extra decoration in its title, apart from its "5G" badge, starts at $ 1
All around, the S20 gets three cameras: 12 megapixels at the wide and ultra-wide corners and a 64-megapixel telephoto lens. That includes "hybrid" optical zoom and super resolution options up to 30x magnification. The front camera, a single module, is a respectable 10 megapixels. It is a "perforator" camera in the center of the screen, according to the design of the Galaxy Note 10, with rounded corners on all edges. All three cameras & # 39; s can take photos & # 39; s and videos & # 39; s at one time and the Samsung software selects the best camera you can use. In an impressive performance, the camera can record & # 39; s video at 8K resolution with DSLR-style image control.
Under the hood is the latest 8-core Exynos processor from Samsung running at 2.7 GHz, although it may be replaced by Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 hardware in some areas. It is linked to 12 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, with the usual MicroSD card slot. The "small" Galaxy S20 gets a 4000mAh battery, an impressive shot in the 7.9 mm thin frame, with even faster 25-watt charging.
Visually, the phone is completely Samsung, with the usual curves and glass back panel. The camera module is striking, a rectangular bump in contrast to the rounded squares on recent Pixel and iPhone models. (The white circle is the LED flash.) What is not visible is a new fingerprint sensor under the screen, which can accommodate two fingers at the same time. Samsung & # 39; s phones support face unlocking, but do not have the faster and more advanced biometric scanning of some of its competitors.
Oh, and in case you were wondering, there is no headphone jack.
Galaxy S20 +
On the way to the Galaxy S20 + you get a larger 6.7-inch screen with the same resolution and a more powerful 4500 mAh battery. It increases the camera range to four sensors, with an added "Depth Vision" sensor as seen on the Galaxy S10 5G and Note 10+. It uses the same processor and RAM as the standard S20, with 512 GB storage as an option. With those upgrades, the price starts at $ 1200.
Galaxy S20 Ultra
The great father of Samsung & # 39; s 2020 setup, the Galaxy S20 Ultra has no less than 6.9 inches in its AMOLED screen, although the resolution and other options same as the smaller phones. The battery is a full 5000 mAh with support for 45 watt charging, although it is also a bit thicker at 8.8 mm. It comes in two models, one with 12 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, and an even more bizarre model with 16 GB and 512 GB respectively.
But the great headline function is undoubtedly the improved camera. It uses the same array with four sensors as the S20 +, but the wide-angle lens hits 108 megapixels. Yup, that's one hundred megapixels, plus eight more just for fun. This gives the S20 Ultra a maximum zoom factor of 100X. It is dramatic to say the least.
Samsung had to make a sacrifice to that huge camera module: the telephoto lens is "only" 48 megapixels with a larger aperture, 3.5 versus 2.0. But with Samsung's image processing technology, it's safe to say that the S20 Ultra will have the best camera performance ever. Whether that is the best on the market … well, we'll have to see.
How much will the Galaxy S20 Ultra cost? Hold your wallets: $ 1400 for the basic version.
When can you get one?
The S20 series will go on sale in the United States from March 6, for carrier versions as well as unlocked versions. All three telephones get a "cosmic gray" color, with the S20 also available in pink, the S20 and S20 + in blue and the S20 + and S20 Ultra in black.
Pre-orders start on February 21. If you pre-order the phone, you will receive $ 100, $ 150 or $ 200 in Samsung credit (for the S20, S20 + and S20 Ultra respectively). Carriers will no doubt offer their own promotions.
