Built using Samsung's second gene-10 nanometer process, the chip seems to be the one used in the latest Galaxy S10 + ceramic release. This unit has 12 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and Samsung only manufactures three LPDDR4X chips: two 8GB chips and the new 12GB package. It is also expected to appear in Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S1
Since the new RAM stores very little space, it will help device makers create more space for larger batteries, 5G chips, AI and more cameras. It runs at the same speed as LPDDR4 RAM (4.266 MB / s), but consumes up to 10 percent less power. It's not likely to be cheap, so you just see the chips in the most expensive versions of premium smartphones.
The extra storage makes the phone faster and especially multitasking more fluid. We reviewed the 12GB Galaxy S10 + and can confirm that extra memory helps games such as PUBG along with browsing, with Instagram and other chores. But even 12 GB of RAM is a task when doing particularly tough tasks like playing stabilized 4K HDR video, which we discovered.
Samsung said it would increase the production of its existing 8GB and the new 12GB 10-nanometer chips to meet expected demand. "With LPDDR4X, we are strengthening our position as a premium mobile memory manufacturer that is best positioned to meet rapidly growing demand from global smartphone manufacturers," said Samsung VP Sewon Chun.
